Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The good old peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a classic American favourite, usually containing grape jelly. If you swap the jelly with marshmallow fluff, what kind of sandwich (pictured) have you got?

Answer: Fluffernutter

I'm a fan of peanut butter and jelly (or jam, as we call it in the UK) sandwiches, although I use raspberry or strawberry jam instead of grape jam. Marshmallow fluff is a marshmallow creme spread. In a Fluffernutter, one slice of bread has peanut butter spread on it and the other has marshmallow fluff spread on it. Fluffernutter cookies and cakes also exist.
2. This sandwich contains Swiss cheese, corned beef, sauerkraut and Russian dressing (a mixture of ketchup, mayonnaise, horseradish and various spices). It is served on toasted rye bread. With which Biblical character does this sandwich share a name?

Answer: Reuben

The Reuben is not named after Joseph's oldest brother in the Bible, but the origins of its name are unclear. Possible inventors include Reuben Kulakofsky, a Jewish grocer from Omaha, and Reuben's Delicatessen, a New York delicatessen whose owner, Arnold Reuben, supposedly provided a sandwich known as a Reuben special in 1914.

Some varieties of Reuben sandwich use Thousand Island dressing instead of Russian dressing; the Montreal variety uses smoked and salt brisket, while other regional varieties replace the beef with fish, such as walleye in Minnesota and grouper in Florida.
3. This sandwich is named for its home city, and contains beef, onions and Swiss or provolone cheese, served in a long roll. If I told you that it was known as a 'cheese steak', could you deduce the name of the city it comes from?

Answer: Philadelphia

This bad boy is the Philly cheesesteak, said to have been invented by a pair of Italian-American restaurateurs, Pat and Harry Olivieri, in the '30s. The story goes that they served chopped steak on an Italian roll at their hot dog stand, supposedly as an alternative to hot dogs, and sold the sandwich to a passing taxi driver, who told them they should sell such sandwiches instead of hot dogs. Pat Olivieri later opened a restaurant, Pat's King of Steaks, in Philadelphia.

Originally, the sandwich did not have cheese, but the addition of cheese caught on after 'Cocky' Joe Lorenza, a manager at the Ridge Avenue branch, added provolone to his steak sandwiches.
4. This sandwich is known as a po' boy, and although the variation pictured contains seafood, meat can also be used as a filling. With which musical city is it associated?

Answer: New Orleans

A po' boy is a Louisiana sandwich, often associated with New Orleans; the name comes from the local pronunciation of 'poor boy'. The name supposedly came from the free sandwiches served by the Martin Brothers Restaurant in New Orleans to striking streetcar workers, also known as 'poor boys'.

Ideally, a po' boy should be made with locally produced French bread. The meat or fish part comes first, followed by 'fixin's', such as pickles, lettuce or mayo. Po' boy shops are a staple of New Orleans food, and also serve other local dishes such as jambalaya or seafood platters. The po' boy's Texan cousin, the BBQ po' boy, contains brisket, sausage and/or roast beef.
5. Pictured here is a BLT, short for bacon, lettuce and tomato. What would you have to do if you wanted to make a BLT into a club sandwich?

Answer: Add another layer of bread and an extra filling

Although bacon, lettuce and tomato can be a club sandwich filling, not all club sandwiches are BLTs; some may contain chicken, turkey and/or cheese. My question specifically refers to the modern version, with two layers separated by another slice of bread. They are usually held together with cocktail sticks; a tall sandwich with multiple layers, held together by a cocktail stick, is called a Dagwood sandwich after the character from the comic strip 'Blondie', who was often drawn eating cartoonishly large sandwiches with several fillings. Breakfast club sandwiches may include breakfast foods such as eggs, while vegetarian alternatives use avocado or vegetarian bacon. Some more upmarket versions contain oyster or crab.

The origins of the club sandwich are unclear; the Union Club of New York City and a gambling club in Saratoga Springs are among the possible places of origin.
6. The sandwich here is one of the lesser-known American sandwiches; it's a bread pocket known as a runza or a bierock, and it usually contains onions, beef and cabbage or sauerkraut. From which region does the runza originate?

Answer: Eastern Europe

The runza or bierock is the sandwich descendant of the pierogi, a stuffed dumpling popular in Eastern Europe. Volga Germans - Germans who had emigrated to the Volga River valley area of Russia - created the bierock as a kind of sandwich counterpart to the pierogi, using yeast pastry.

In turn, Volga German migrants to the US brought the bierock to Nebraska. The name 'runza', thought to be of Low German origin, was coined by Sally Everett, née Brening, who used a family recipe. She sold the sandwich with her brother Alex in their restaurant, the Runza Drive-Inn, which later became a chain known as Runza Restaurants. Runzas are a popular sandwich choice at University of Nebraska football games.
7. This sandwich is a messy one to eat, hence its name. Its filling is made up of minced pork or beef, tomato ketchup or sauce, onions and seasoning, and it is traditionally served on a hamburger bun. What is it called?

Answer: Sloppy joe

A sloppy joe is a type of loose meat sandwich (i.e. a sandwich containing minced meat, sautéed onions and sometimes a sauce or cheese). The main distinction between a sloppy joe and a traditional loose meat or tavern sandwich is that it contains tomato sauce.

As its name suggests, it's hard to eat politely! Why its name is 'joe' is unclear, but it could be a reference to a cook named Joe who sold such sandwiches in Sioux City, Iowa, in the '30s. The British pizza restaurant chain Pizza Express had a pizza equivalent, the Sloppy Guiseppe, which could also be bought in supermarkets and had a topping of minced beef, peppers and onions.
8. The Cuban sandwich, pictured here, originated among Cuban immigrants in Florida. Which of these ingredients is NOT a traditional ingredient of a Cuban sandwich?

Answer: Tomatoes

Cuban sandwiches traditionally use Cuban bread - a white bread containing fat such as lard or vegetable shortening, shaped like a baguette - and contains ham, roasted pork (although salami can be used as well, although opinion is divided as to whether a 'true' Cuban sandwich contains salami), Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles, and is toasted. Exact origins of this sandwich are vague, but because of Cuba's proximity to Florida, it was most likely introduced by Cuban migrant workers. Cuban sandwiches were first served in cafés in Tampa and Key West which catered to Cuban workers, and the popularity spread to Miami, with its large Cuban community.

A plancha, a griddle which functions similarly to a sandwich toaster, is traditionally used to toast the sandwich.
9. The filling of this sandwich is an omelette, named for a city in Colorado and containing ham, peppers and onions. With that in mind, can you guess what the name of the sandwich is?

Answer: Denver sandwich

The Denver omelette, an omelette traditionally filled with diced ham, green peppers and onions, acts as the filling for a Denver sandwich. Denver omelettes are sometimes topped with cheese, and served with hash browns or fried potatoes. A New York variety, the Manhattan sandwich, contains minced ham, onion and fried egg. Another variety, the St Paul sandwich, contains fried onions or onion rings.

The origins of both the sandwich and its name are unclear; Denver's Taber Hotel, restauranteurs Albert McVittie and MD Looney have all been cited as possible creators of the sandwich, while another theory reckons that the omelette is a descendant of egg foo yung, a dish enjoyed by Chinese migrant workers.
10. The muffuletta is both a type of bread and a meat sandwich made from said bread. It was introduced to the US by Italian migrants. Along with salami, which spicy Italian sausage - originating in Bologna, and containing cubes of pork fat - is used as a filling?

Answer: Mortadella

The muffuletta is originally from Sicily, and is a round, flat sesame bread, similar to focaccia but softer. In Palermo, it is traditional to eat muffuletta on Day of the Dead. The muffuletta sandwich gets its name from the bread. It contains layers of mortadella, ham, salami, provolone, Swiss cheese, and an olive salad consisting of diced olives, giardiniera (pickled vegetables), oregano, garlic and olive oil.

Mortadella is an Italian sausage made from cured pork and flavoured with black pepper, myrtle berries and pistachios. Traditionally, the little fat cubes come from the pig's neck. Mortadella bears some similarities to Bologna sausage, or 'baloney', which can be made out of different types of meat, not just pork; vegetarian baloney also exists.
