Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where are bananas thought to have originated?

Answer: South East Asia

They are a tropical fruit, and it is likely that their long history started in countries like Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. Explorers introduced the banana to many other locations, including the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent, the Caribbean, northern South America, northern Australia, and eastern Africa. The leading producer of bananas is India.
2. The scientific genus of the banana is 'musa'. What is the etymology of 'musa'?

Answer: Arabic word for 'banana'

Sometimes the scientific terms are not really that mysterious.
3. Which of these would best describe the leaves of a mature banana plant?

Answer: Very long and broad

Banana leaves can be more than 2 metres (over 6 feet) long and a metre wide. They are used in beauty treatments and natural therapies. They are also used in cooking; replace aluminium foil with banana leaves to cook your fish on the barbeque.
4. Bananas are high in what nutritional requirement?

Answer: Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates make bananas an ideal energy food, and they are also a good natural answer to drowsiness and tiredness. They contain potassium, phosphorus, oodles of vitamin C and A, and lots of fibre. And guess what? They taste great, too!

They contain very little fat or sodium, and do not have any cholesterol at all.
5. A series of Australian television commercials touting bananas started in 1994, mainly targetting children. According to the ads, what did bananas do?

Answer: Make those bodies sing

'Bah-nah-nah-nah-nana, make those bodies sing!' has kids being kids, playing games, getting into mischief, and smiling and laughing a lot. The campaign was instigated by the Australian Banana Industry group.

The iconic Vegemite puts a rose in every cheek, Mars Bars help you work, rest and play, providing you eat one every day, and the Great Wall of China kept the rabbits out, according to a very funny ad for Bigpond broadband.
6. What name is given to the rootstock from which a banana plant grows?

Answer: Rhizome

A hand is a small bunch of bananas, a bract is similar to a leaf and a plantain is a type of banana, usually not as sweet as a 'normal' banana.
7. What happens if you keep bananas and other fruit, such as oranges, in the same bowl?

Answer: The bananas ripen quicker

Various fruits produce ethylene, which speeds up ripening. If you want to ripen a banana even quicker, store it in a paper bag.
8. Bananas are green when they are not ripe, and bright yellow when they ripen. What colour is the flower of the banana plant?

Answer: Purple

The flower is a purpley-red colour and grows from the end of the fruit. It is used in several Asian dishes, and is just as healthy as the fruit itself, being a good source of vitamins C and A.
9. Banana skins are edible.

Answer: True

Boil them, or fry them, and they are just as nutritious as the flesh inside. I have not tried this- researching a quiz has SOME limits! They are also reputed to be good for your skin- put a piece of banana peel on a wart, and it should disappear.
10. Because of its economic reliance on the banana plantations, which country was the original 'banana republic'?

Answer: Honduras

A 'banana republic' is a socio-economic term for a country that relies on a single product for its livelihood, usually agricultural. In the 19th century, an American company found that it could import the fruit from Honduras, much more cheaply than producing it at home.

The company became so powerful in Honduras (and later on, in other Latin American countries), that it was dictating policy to the local governments.
