Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game of Magic: the Gathering is set across a diverse set of planes of existence. Many of the planes that Magic has visited have become specific expansion sets while furthering the overall story arc of the game's lore. What is the name given to the reality in which the planes reside?

Answer: The Multiverse

The planes of Magic: the Gathering can be found in The Multiverse. They, along with the space between the planes known as the Blind Eternities, make up all of existence in Magic's lore. Powerful beings known as planeswalkers are able to travel between the planes. Players of the game, as well as specifically designed cards, represent these dimension traveling beings.
2. For much of Magic's early existence, the game was set on one specific plane. The plane is home to the volcanic mountains of Shiv, the swamps of Urborg, the island of Tolaria, the nation of Benalia, and the forests of Llanowar. It was the site of the Brothers' War, a major Phyrexian invasion, and the quest for the Mirari.

Answer: Dominaria

Dominaria is the central plane in the Multiverse. It is the primary setting for several different blocks, including Ice Age, Urza's Saga, Invasion, Odyssey, and Time Spiral.
3. The planeswalker Karn created a metal plane out of empty space and populated it with races of beings stolen from other planes. The plane has undergone a number of name changes as control of the plane has shifted from block to block. Do you know what the plane's original name was? As a hint, it was named after the type of metal Karn himself is made out of.

Answer: Argentum

The plane which would come to be known as Mirrodin was originally named Argentum. Karn created a guardian to watch over Argentum out of the powerful artifact, The Mirari, which he had previously made. The Mirrodin block is set on this place and describes the struggle between a band of heroes and the increasingly insane and tyrannical Memnarch.
4. Alas, Mirrodin has gone through yet another name change throughout the storyline of Magic: the Gathering. A block released in 2010 described a war on the plane which resulted in it being renamed to which of the following?

Answer: New Phyrexia

Karn, who inadvertently spread Phyrexian oil to the plane and was driven insane in the process, was responsible for the "compleation"(sic) of organic matter of Mirrodin to "perfected" artifice. The planeswalkers Koth, Elspeth Tirel, and Venser were able to restore Karn's mind, but it was simply too late. Karn's lieutenants, the Praetors Elesh Norn, Urabrask, Jin-Gitaxias, Sheoldred, and Vorinclex, were able to take control of the plane and now each rule their own domain within the plane.
5. One of my personal favorite planes is that of Ravnica; a plane comprised almost entirely of cityscape. Ravnica is ruled by ten guilds which each represent a pair of Magic: the Gathering's five colored sources of mana. Can you recall which guild represents the combination of blue and red mana, resulting in grand experiments that tend to lead to chaotic results? This isn't that tough of a question, is it?

Answer: The Izzet League

The Izzet League was named after its founder (and as of the creation of this quiz, current guild leader), the dragon inventor Niv-Mizzet. The Rakdos Cult is driven by the notion that random acts of violence are fun representing the chaotic and often evil combination of black and red mana; the Simic Combine is a scientific group focused on forced mutation and adaptation, representing the inquisitive aspect of blue with the life force of green; and the House Dimir is a secretive organization using subterfuge and trickery to gain power representing the combination of blue and black mana.
6. The plane of Alara was once shattered into five "shards" with each shard representing a primary color and that color's two adjacent colors on Magic: the Gathering's "Color Pie". Which shard did the planeswalker Nicol Bolas retreat to after the Great Mending in an attempt to regain his lost power?

Answer: Grixis

While Jund (red base with green and black supporting) was traditionally home to the dragons of Alara; Grixis aligned perfectly with the Elder Dragon's own color identity of black primary with blue and red support. Bolas sought to manipulate the forces of Alara to create the Conflux - the re-joining of all five shards - and harvest the resulting energy.

While Bolas was successful in his plot, he was badly injured in a battle with one very ticked off Ajani Goldmane.
7. On which of the following planes would you be able to find both elves and goblins?

Answer: All of these planes are home to elves and goblins

Elves and goblins tend to be found on many different planes within The Multiverse. Elves are often found in green, while goblins are often red-based. Other popular creature types that have been see on many different planes include vampires, zombies, angels, and dragons.
8. The idyllic, always daytime, plane of Lorwyn is interesting because it contains a second, mirror-like version of itself known as Shadowmoor. Shadowmoor is always plunged into the darkness of night and its denizens are twisted alternate versions of their Lorwyn counterparts. Can you name the event which flips the plane from day to night and vice versa? Sleeping Beauty might not have minded perpetual night...

Answer: The Great Aurora

The Great Aurora was a naturally occurring phenomenon being artificially manipulated by the Queen of the Faeries, Oona. The events of the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor super-block depict the unexpected shortening of The Great Aurora's cycle due to the cataclysmic effects The Great Mending had on The Multiverse.
9. While the plane of Alara introduced "shards," the plane of Tarkir introduced "wedges" - tri-color alignments based around the two allied colors partnering with their mutual enemy color. Can you name the clan that represented the wedge of white, green and black?

Answer: Abzan Houses

The wedge of the allied colors of white and green mana along with their mutually opposing black mana were represented by the Abzan Houses. In the alternate timeline of Tarkir, the Abzan Houses were replaced with the Clan Dromoka by ceasing their Kin-Tree traditions and losing the black from their color identity in the process.
10. The developers of Magic: the Gathering took us to which plane designed around the principal concept of horror stories with a world filled with werewolves, vampires, ghosts, demons, and fanatical humans?

Answer: Innistrad

Innistrad is the home plane of the vampiric planeswalker Sorin Markov. Markov had created Avacyn, the Angel of Hope, to serve as a balancing agent between the humans and the evil forces of Innistrad that sought to prey on them. The events of the Innistrad block deal with the chaos on Innistrad in the absence of Avacyn and her host of angels until Avacyn is freed from her prison and hope restored to humanity.
