Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which plane was the original that hosted most of the early sets, and suffered a Phyrexian invasion?

Answer: Dominaria

Dominaria was the first plane created for the game, with most early expansions taking place there. The blocks "Ice Age" (1995), "Mirage" (1996), "Urza's block" (1998), "Invasion" (2000), "Odyssey" (2001), and "Onslaught" (2002) all took place on Dominaria. Apart from the cards, many novels were also written with stories set on Dominaria.

Many of "Magic's" most powerful characters started on Dominaria, such as Urza, Lilliana, and Nicol Bolas.
2. Which plane had a gothic horror vibe, with vampires, werewolves, and zombies?

Answer: Innistrad

Innistrad was seen in the "Innistrad" block (2011), and later in the "Shadows over Innistrad" block (2016). Gothic horror was a natural fit for "Magic", and made for very entertaining games. Each of the friendly two-colour pairings had a creature type associated with it. Green-white had humans, red-green was werewolves, black-red was vampires, blue-black was zombies, and white-blue was spirits.
3. Which plane had a Japanese theme that featured samurai, ronin, and spirits?

Answer: Kamigawa

Kamigawa was seen in 2004, and is generally considered one of the weaker "Magic" sets. Despite its poor reception, Wizards still used the plane in their story lines. The planeswalker Tamiyo was from Kamigawa, but was not created until years after the "Kamigawa" block had concluded.
4. Which plane was one giant metropolis run by ten guilds, with each focused on a different two-colour pairing?

Answer: Ravnica

Ravnica was introduced in 2005, and visited again in 2012. The "Ravnica" block introduced ten guilds, one for each of the possible two-colour combinations. Before, players might have described their decks as "red-white", or "blue-green", but after "Ravnica", players more often called them "Boros" or "Simic", after the guilds.

Ravnica is often considered one of the best "Magic" planes. It was so popular that Wizards, who had created "Magic", and had acquired the rights to "Dungeons and Dragons", selected it as the first "Magic" plane to get a "D&D" supplement.
5. Which plane introduced gods to "Magic" with its ancient Greece theme?

Answer: Theros

Theros was a plane where powerful gods walked among the mortals. In the game, god creatures were powerful and indestructible, but could also not function unless they had enough devotion.

Gideon Jura, one of the most well-known planeswalkers, was from Theros. Later in the "Magic" storyline, he visited the plane of Amonkhet, which had an ancient Egypt theme. It also had gods walking among mortals (with different mechanics), and Gideon felt a kinship with the locals.
6. Which plane was made entirely of metal and had a separate sun for each of the five colours?

Answer: Mirrodin

Mirrodin was first seen in 2003, and revisited in 2010. It had a heavy focus on artifacts (including the novel coloured artifacts). In the first block, the story revolved around the missing green sun, with it arriving in the final set, "Fifth Dawn". In the 2010 "Scars of Mirrodin" block, it became the second plane to be invaded by the Phyrexians, and became New Phyrexia.
7. Which plane had been shattered into five shards, with each one focusing on a different three-colour combination?

Answer: Alara

Alara was originally visited in 2008. In the final set of the block, "Alara Reborn", every single card was a multi-coloured card.

Each of the five planes had a different three-colour shard, which was one colour paired with both its friendly colours (eg. white paired with green and blue). Each shard had its own key mechanics and play style. The other three-colour combinations (one colour paired with both its enemies) were called "wedges", and were featured in the "Khans of Tarkir" block in 2014.
8. Which plane, with an Indian and steampunk theme, was Chandra Naalar's birthplace?

Answer: Kaladesh

Kaladesh was first seen in 2016. It had a comparatively lighter vibe than the sets preceding it. Kaladesh was a plane filled with inventors, with the story leading up to a big inventors' fair, where they could show off their creations and compete. While the creatures were conventional, they could often create swarms of small artifact creatures, and the new vehicle artifact type made its debut.
9. Which plane had strange energies that caused the land to hover, and was also the first plane to suffer from the eldritch Eldrazi?

Answer: Zendikar

Zendikar was first visited in 2009. It was an interesting plane, but had a sense of foreboding. In the final set of the block, the horrifying Eldrazi appeared. They were massive creatures, difficult to remove, and could destroy large swaths of permanents with their annihilator ability. They were quite expensive to bring out, but the new Eldrazi Spawn token creatures could be used to speed up the process.

In 2015, "Magic" went back to Zendikar in the "Battle for Zendikar" block. Immediately after that, the Eldrazi jumped into a different plane, in the "Shadows over Innistrad" block.
10. Which plane had a Central American theme, and introduced the dinosaur creature type to "Magic"?

Answer: Ixalan

The "Ixalan" block (2017) focused heavily on the concept of exploration. Creatures could explore and find treasure while they searched for the fabled city of gold, Orazca. There were four tribes in Ixalan, with dinosaurs being the major new addition. The other featured tribe was pirates.

While pirates had been printed before, they had never received as much attention, or been conceived as a cohesive tribe. The last two tribes were merfolk and vampires, which had been featured in "Magic" sets before.
