The slow, methodical, controlling nature lends itself well to the idea of an ancient government.

Red is the colour of passion and aggression, and white is the colour of order and working as a collective. These two colours came together to support the army of Ravnica. Many well-trained, coordinated, and aggressive beings of many races working together to protect Ravnica (admittedly often from the very denizens of Ravnica).

Black is the colour of death, while green is the colour of life. These two meet in Ravnica's sewers and waste-disposal facilities. The Golgari cards often focus on manipulation of the graveyard (discard pile), sometimes bringing creatures back from the dead.

The House Dimir is only officially Ravnica's information-focused faction. Dimir is part blue, like the Azorius Senate, so they like to control things. But their second colour is black instead of white, meaning instead of using the legal system, Dimir employs assassins and intrigue to get their way.

The Gruul clans were meant to be Ravnica's game keepers, but they slowly lost their jurisdiction to the Selesnya Conclave and the Simic Combine. Green is the colour of nature and power, and red is the colour of passion and ferocity. The Gruul Clans embody all of those things.

They were not coordinated or cunning like the other guilds, so they got squeezed out. But they never lost their rage, and they started turning it against the city, which was encroaching on Ravnica's natural ecosystems.

These two come together in Orzhov, which, while running the banks and the church, are better known for being Ravnica's organized crime family, like the Mafia. Red provides passion and black provides the greed. The Cult of Rakdos, like House Dimir and the Orzhov Syndicate, has only a veneer of legitimacy. It focuses on entertainment that often overflows into hedonism and gluttony, and its spectacles often turn violent and bloody.

Green focuses on nature and white on order and peace. Selesnia takes care of Ravnica's citizens, and its facilities are clean, well-kept gardens. They are particular good at domesticating wild animals and plants.

One of the five "enemy" pairings, blue focuses on the science and the green focuses on life. The Simic Combine, like the Izzet League (another "enemy" pairing), are group of somewhat mad scientists. They focus on guided evolution, making advances in medical science and personal enhancements. They also tended to grow hideous creatures in test tubes.
