Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lettuce belong to which of the following families?

Answer: Daisy

Lettuce look more like cabbages than daisies, don't you think. I can't imagine a lettuce chain. Daisy chains are much prettier. Lettuce was originally a weed but is now cultivated worldwide.
2. What claim to fame does romaine lettuce hold that other lettuce can only dream about?

Answer: It was the first plant grown in space.

NASA astronauts harvested the crop August 10, 2015 after growing it in special chambers. I wonder how lettuce can be eaten in a gravity free environment.
3. Lettuce is a good source of which nutrient?

Answer: Vitamin K

It's quite the little powerhouse. Vitamin K aids in clotting of the blood. The darker leaves provide the most nutrients. Apparently the Chinese believe lettuce brings good luck and eat it on special occasions.
4. Which of the following are types of lettuce?

Answer: Oakleaf, Coral, Cos

So many plants to choose from and some look very similar. They are pretty much interchangeable in most salads. Fennel is a member of the carrot family and kale is a nutrient dense leafy plant closely related to the wild cabbage. Dandelions are believed to regulate blood sugar and are rich in antioxidants.
5. The ancient Egyptians considered lettuce to be a symbol of what?

Answer: Fertility

Do you think it's because rabbits like them? Lettuce was also thought to help induce sleep. Not bad for a plant that started life as a weed. Adonis was killed in a bed of lettuce by a boar sent by Artemis to avenge his jealousy of Aphrodite.
6. Who is thought to have built a statue in honour of lettuce?

Answer: Caesar Augustus

I'd like to see that. Perhaps it was more of a monument. Lettuce supposedly cured him of a dreadful illness. Eat your greens people.
7. Who introduced lettuce to the Americas?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

Columbus brought it on his second voyage in 1494. Lettuce seeds came to Australia with Captain Cook and the First Fleet.
8. Who invented the Caesar salad?

Answer: Caesar Cardini

It was made during Prohibition when Californians fled to Mexico for 4th of July celebrations. The kitchen at a popular Italian restaurant ran out of ingredients to feed inebriated diners and Caesar Cardini conjured up the salad from the few items left in stock. The rest is history.
9. Choose the correct statement.

Answer: Rocket/arugula belongs to the cabbage family.

We call it rocket in Australia. I like this peppery little leaf. Rocket is a brassicaceae and is closely related to mustard plants.
10. Why can't lettuce be canned or frozen?

Answer: It contains too much water.

Can you imagine putting frozen lettuce in a sandwich or using frozen lettuce cups for San Choy Bow?
