Locking pliers are also called "vise grips". The advantage of using these is their tightness can be "locked" by turned the bolt located at the bottom of one handle. A side-cutting plier is used for wire work, to strip insulation or cut wire. A long-nose plier is used to reach places where space is minimal. One of their uses is to attach wires to terminals.

A diagonal plier is used to cut wire. They are better than side-cutting pliers as they cut closer.

3. Many of the door knobs in my home are loose. I need to tighten them before they completely fall apart. What tools are needed to fix the door knobs?

Answer: Screwdrivers

The screwdrivers can either be standard or Phillips. A socket wrench is used for nuts and bolts. A needle nose plier is used on wire to bend, cut or reposition it. A hammer is used for driving nails and would damage the knob or housing.

4. I want to build a large flower box for my backyard. I plan to use bolts to hold it together instead of screws. If I am going to do the job onsite, which tool would I use to make holes in the railroad ties I am using?

Answer: Hand drill

A hand drill can be used for wood, plastic and soft metal. The term "hand drill" can denote two different types. One is the manual version which was used prior to the invention of power tools. The other version is a drill which is held in the hand and powered by electricity.

A hammer drill is normally used for drilling masonry. A rotary hammer drill is used for masonry work and concrete. A drill press is more accurate than a hand drill. However, it is not portable and would require placing the railroad ties on the drill press stand or workbench.

5. Now that the holes for the flower box are done, I need a tool to tighten the bolts that are holding it together. Of the following tools, which one should I use?

Answer: Socket wrench

A socket wrench has a ratcheting mechanism which does not require the wrench be removed/refitted for each turn. It is called a reciprocating motion. Sockets are attached to the wrench based upon the size of the bolt or nut. A screwdriver would not work as the bolt head is not grooved for the insertion of the screwdriver. An allen wrench is used with a bolt which has a depression in the head to accommodate the Allen wrench.

The allen wrench is shaped like the letter "L" and has a cross-section which is hexagonal.

A monkey wrench is rarely used today. It was replaced by wrenches with more compact heads to aid in working in confined areas. It was invented by Charles Moncky.

6. I'm almost finished with a necklace I started last week. All I need to do is add a particular type of bead at each end and tighten the bead so my necklace won't fall apart. What type of tool do I need?

Answer: Crimping pliers

Crimping pliers are best for jewelry use. They have two notches for crimping the crimp bead. One will result in a tube shape to the bead, the other will result in a figure 8 shape. A bent nose plier is used for grasping or bending small projects. A flat nose plier is used for bending, straightening or shaping wire.

A round nose plier is used for creating larger loops and are also sturdier than needle nose pliers.

7. My next project is to place a small wall around my patio. What would I use to ensure my wall is vertical?

Answer: Plumb line

A plumb line is used by carpenters, brick layers and masons. It is a weight (usually pointed) that is hung on a string. A yard stick is a flat wooden, narrow board with measurements marked on it. It is used to measure lengths up to three feet. A tape measure is a ruler in a flexible form. If it is it made of fiberglass, it can be used to measure material (fabric).

A metal tape measure are used in carpentry and construction. A framing square is used for measurements, especially angles.

8. As my flower box turned out so well, I've decided to build a bird feeder. I don't have any power tools. What type of tool do I need to cut the wood for my project?

Answer: Hand saw

A hand saw is utilized to cut wood into a variety of shapes. A hacksaw is used for cutting bone, metal and other hard materials. A veneer saw is used to cut thin (about 1/8" thick) slices of wood. The slices are then glued to furniture or cabinets.

9. I need to shave off a little wood on my bird house as the pieces are not fitting tightly together. What tool should I use for this purpose?

Answer: Sanding plane

A sanding plane is used to sand down flat places like the edges of pieces of wood. When the work only needs a small amount of wood to be removed, this is the best option. A saw would not take small amounts of wood off like the sanding plane does. A belt sander is too aggressive of an action on wood.

They are normally used to rapidly remove material. A draw knife is used to shape wood and removes large sections of wood at one time.

10. I want to carve a design on my bird house. This will involve removing small slivers of wood. What type of tool would I use?

Answer: Gouge

A gouge typically has a cross section in the shape of a "U". It works best for creating concave designs. An awl is a spike with a point at one end. They are used for marking wood and punching holes in wood and leather. A cold chisel is used to remove metal. A toothed chisel is used to carve stone, concrete or bricks.
