Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tool could be found in a garden shed, or a mechanic's workshop. Either way, it only has one purpose, but what is it used for?

Answer: Removing and replacing spark plugs

Spark plugs come in a few different sizes, hence the two sizes on this simple tool. Just slip the appropriate size over the plug and use a lever through the holes to remove it, clean it (or replace it), and tighten it back up again.
2. Have a close look at the fulcrum on this tool and you will see that the points will go outwards when the handles are squeezed, the opposite to a normal pair of pliers. What special use would this implement have?

Answer: Removing circlips

A circlip (combination of 'circle' and 'clip'), clips onto a shaft to stop items such as cogs, sprockets, etc, from moving along the shaft. They are usually made of spring steel and resemble an incomplete circular washer. They have two holes that correspond to the points on the circlip pliers, so that when points are separated, the clip can be removed from the shaft.
3. This tool is mainly used by carpenters and bricklayers. Its name will give a major hint to its purpose- what is it called?

Answer: Spirit level

The model shown in the picture can be used for horizontal, vertical or 45 degree aspects. The small green tubes are partially filled with liquid (spirit) and are fractionally curved to enable a bubble to form. If the bubble is between the checkmarks, the item is level (or perpendicular/45 degrees, as required).

A slide rule is a mathematical tool, an early type of calculator. A plumb bob is basically a weight on a string, used for finding verticality and a Vernier caliper is used for very accurate measurements of pipe diameters.
4. This tool may look like a pair of pliers, but is not recommended that they be used as such. What sort of tradesman would be most likely to have one of these in his toolbox?

Answer: Electrician

This gadget is used to strip the plastic cover off insulated wires. The different sized holes correspond to the various gauges (thicknesses) of wires.
5. These small tools are commonly known as hex keys, but they are also named for the American company that first manufactured them. What is that name?

Answer: Allen key

Allen keys are designed for use with bolts that have a hexagonal socket head. They are usually sold as a set of various sizes. They were trademarked to Allen Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut in 1910.

An Abloy key is a key manufactured by the Abloy company in Finland and can either be a door key or a padlock key. A Don key is an animal and a Phillip key is a figment of my imagination.
6. This is a very specialised tool that would only be used by a motor mechanic. What would he use it for?

Answer: Removing an oil filter

Most oil filters are made of soft metals, such as mild steel, that would get crushed by a normal wrench. Also, car makers tend to put the things in the most awkward spots, where a normal spanner cannot operate. The flexible metal strap on this tool wraps tightly around the filter and spreads the pressure over a wide area, virtually eliminating the possibility of damage.
7. This object is about 45cm (18") long and can be made of plastic or metal. What is its main use?

Answer: Stirring paint

Attached to an electric drill, it makes paint mixing much easier than using a flat piece of wood. It employs the same principle as an electric food mixer.
8. Every house would have quite a few of these, but they would not normally be visible. In which room would it be the LEAST likely that you would find one?

Answer: Lounge room

That thing is a simple tap washer. It fits just below the tap handle and blocks off the water pipe to the spout. As you turn the handle, the washer is forced open by pressure, allowing the water to flow.

In my picture the stem is made of nylon, but they are often made of brass or copper. The seal itself is made of more flexible material- rubber, silicon, or even leather.
9. This little gadget is more of an accessory, rather than a tool in its own right. Which other piece of equipment is it used in conjunction with?

Answer: Electric drill

The chuck key tightens the jaws of the chuck, which is the spinning part of the drill. Put the drill bit into the jaws and tighten hard. There are many different types of drill bits, mainly differentiated by the material that you want to put a hole in. Wood, concrete, glass, metal, plastic- you name it, and there is a bit that will cut it.

A bottle-jack is NOT used for lifting bottles, but is named because of its shape. It is a powerful hydraulic jack that can be used for lifing a car.
10. This is not a common implement, but performs its assigned task very well. It is about a metre (3 feet) long, and quite heavy. What would you use it for?

Answer: Driving metal fenceposts

The fenceposts have varying names around the world- star pickets, Y-posts, T-posts, droppers, etc., but the principle of the tool remains the same. Fit the driver over the post, and slide it up and down, to drive the post into the ground. It can also be used with wooden posts.

I guess it could be used for storing beers, but I suggest that a fridge would be a better option.
