Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What creature, in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), is described as a small humanoid, having skin color varying from yellow to orange to deep red, and has a Challenge Rating (CR) of 1/4? (Need more: this creature tends to be cowardly, and flees the field if a battle turns against it.)

Answer: Goblin

Kobolds have a CR of 1/6 and their skin color ranges from rusty brown to rusty black. Gnomes have a CR of 1/2 and their skin color ranges from dark tan to woody brown. Trolls are large giants with a CR of 5.
2. What D&D creature has a CR of 1/3, is considered a small animal, and has Scent as a special quality? (Note: This creature can be found in Appendix 1 of the Monster Manual.)

Answer: Dog

The cat is considered a tiny animal and the elephant is considered huge. The eagle, although small, does not receive Scent as a special quality; in fact, eagles do not receive any special qualities.
3. What 6-1/2 foot tall, medium-sized D&D creature with a CR of 1/2, is known for hating elves?

Answer: Hobgoblin

Dwarves stand an average of only four feet tall and Ogres are large giants. Zombies have no intelligence, and are therefore unable to grasp the concept of grudges; they simply do as their masters say.
4. What smaller and thinner subrace of elves from D&D is usually evil in alignment and has a CR of 1?

Answer: Drow

The Homunculus is actually a tiny construct created by a wizard, and Krenshars are cat-like carnivores. Halfelves are not actually an elven subrace, although they are often mistaken for one.
5. Looking like a primitive human with gray skin and wolf-like ears, what D&D creature fits this description and has a CR of 1/2? (Need more: this creature has dark vision and light sensitivity.)

Answer: Orc

Elves are pale-skinned. Drow have black skin; although they have dark vision, they have light blindness (rather than light sensitivity). Gnolls are wolf-like with the head of a hyena.
6. What five feet tall, 150-lb reptilian D&D creature has a head crowned with a frill that reaches from its forehead to the base of its neck? (Need more: it has a CR of 1.)

Answer: Troglodyte

Although Kobolds are also reptilian, they have a CR of only 1/6, and have horns - rather than frills - on their heads. Lizardfolk are aquatic, and they range in height from six to seven feet. Dryads are feys, which are lovely tree sprites - not at all reptilian.
7. Imagine a plant-like creature that could attract you close to it, but would be unable to attack you. What D&D creature with a CR of 1 fits this description?

Answer: Shrieker

Althought the Shrieker cannot attack, it draws you close so that other creatures can dispose of you. A violet fungus can actually attack, although it often works in conjunction with the Shrieker. The Stirge is a bat-like creature that attacks by relieving its prey of blood. Oozes are amorphous creatures that live only to eat.
8. What devil-like D&D creature, with a CR of 1, stands five feet tall and looks like a disgusting blob made of molten flesh?

Answer: Lemure

Although the Imp, the Osyluth, and the Kyton are all types of devils, the Imp has a CR of 2 and wings like a bat, the Osyluth has a CR of 6 and a tail like a scorpion, and the Kyton has a CR of 6 and is wears chains for clothing.
9. What D&D aquatic animal with a CR of 1 tends to try to escape combat when disturbed by changing colors, giving it a +4 bonus to Hide checks?

Answer: Octopus

Squid, although also aquatic with a CR of 1, are fairly aggressive, and sometimes feared even more than sharks. Sea Hags are also aquatic, but have a CR of 4. Doppelgangers are not acquatic, and they change form rather than color, taking on the shape of their enemy.
10. What small reptilian D&D creature with a CR of 1/6, tends to be cowardly and sadistic, speaks Draconic, and sounds like a yapping dog?

Answer: Kobold

Orcs are medium-sized creatures with a CR of 1/2, and they look like primitive humans with gray skin. Hobgoblins are also medium-sized creatures with a CR of 1/2, and can stand up to 6.5 feet tall. Goblins have a closer CR, but it is still greater than that of the Kobold at 1/4.
