Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not classified as an evasion ability?

Answer: Protection

Although giving a permanent protection from something may seem like evasion to some extent, it is classified as a static ability.
2. This ability which appeared in the set Portal Three Kingdoms works pretty much the same as flying. What is this ability?

Answer: Horsemanship

Creatures with Horsemanship cannot be blocked by creatures without this ability, pretty much the same as flying.
3. This ability, which appeared in the Kamigawa block, only functions when the card with the said ability is in a player's hand. This ability requires the player to reveal the card with the said ability from his or her hand and return an attacking but unblocked creature s/he controlls to his or her hand. The creature with the said ability is then put into play from its owner's hand, tapped and attacking.

Answer: Ninjutsu

It was released, specifically, in Betrayers of Kamigawa. Cards with this ability are all either blue or black. Some examples include Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni and Skullsnatcher.
4. This ability, which appeared both in the Ravnica: City of Guilds and Future Sight expansions, functions while the spell is on the stack and allows the spell's controller to tap any number of creatures s/he controlls as an additional cost, reducing the cost to play the said spell by (1) or by one mana of any of the spell's colors.

Answer: Convoke

In the Ravnica block, spells with this ability belong to the Selesnya guild. Spells with this ability include Chant of Vitu-Ghazi and Autochthon Wurm from Ravnica, and Angel of Salvation and Kavu Primarch from Future Sight.
5. How many creatures, from Alpha up to Shards of Alara, have built-in plainswalk or snow-covered plainswalk (their controllers need not activate any ability to grant them plainswalk)? Include cards form Un-sets.

Answer: 5

Plainswalk is the least occurring landwalk in Magic: The Gathering, next to denimwalk. Creatures who have plainswalk include Boggart Arsonists from Shadowmoor, Graceful Antelope from Odyssey, Righteous Avengers form Legends, Zodiac Rooster from Protal Three Kingdoms, and Old Fogey from Unhinged (which has snow-covered landwalk).
6. An ability which appeared in the Legions set entitles the controller of a creature spell with ((keyword))X (where X is a specified number) to reveal any number of cards from his or her hand in order to put X +1/+1 counters on it as it comes into play. What is this keyword ability?

Answer: Amplify

Every color has at least two cards in Legions with this keyword ability, except Red, which has only one of these, and blue, which has none.
7. Let's say you control a Greater Morphling. You attack your opponent with it, and just for fun, you pay (2) and activate one of its numerous abilities and give it provoke until end of turn. Your opponent asks you what the keyword does. Being a very fair Magic rules lawyer, you reply:

Answer: "I get to choose which one of your creatures, tapped or untapped, blocks my Greater Morphling. If the creature I choose is tapped, it becomes untapped."

Granted that you possess in you a healthy dose of sportsmanship, this is what you'd say.
8. This is an interesting one. Fill in the blank: According to the Comprehensive Rules as of October 2008, "_________ is a static ability with no effect." Trust me, I did not make this up.

Answer: Substance

Yeah, I didn't make this up. This is according to section 502.49a of the rulebook. You can check if you want to.

This keyword is used in rewording some of the older cards. The rewording is displayed in the game's website's Gatherer, in order to make rules text easier to understand. One example is Armor of Thorns, an aura from Mirage which costs 1G to cast. Its effect's rewording, according to both Gatherers, is:

"You may play Armor of Thorns any time you could play an instant. If it was played any time a sorcery couldn't have been played, it gains substance until end of turn and when it loses substance, sacrifice it.
Enchant nonblack creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2."
9. This keyword ability restricts the spell's controller to cast any spell for the rest of the game, but gives the player a copy of the spell with the said ability for free during each of the player's upkeep. What is this keyword ability?

Answer: Epic

Released in the Saviors of Kamigawa set, one cycle of sorceries was released with this keyword ability. My personal favorites are the blue and black ones. =)
10. This next keyword ability, based on a pretty old mechanic, gives a defending player counters when a creature with this ability deals damage to him/her. When a player receives ten or more of these counters, s/he loses the game the next time a player would recieve priority. What is this keyword ability?

Answer: Infect

Creatures with Infect deal their damage in the form of poison counters. Any player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.
