Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While visiting Australia, Ralph was appalled to see a newspaper article which jokingly referred to a Sydney restaurant offering a 'McDromedary' burger. What kind of meat, more commonly eaten in Middle Eastern countries, started appearing on Australian menus in the early years of the 21st century?

Answer: Camel

A dromedary is the proper term for a single-humped camel, the meat of which is commonly eaten in the areas where they dwell. Roasted whole camel was served at banquets in ancient Persia, and the Roman emperor Heliogabalus is recorded as having enjoyed camel heel. The meat is lean and strongly flavoured, and has been compared to goat. Australian abattoirs actually export camel meat from the slaughter of the feral camels that roam the central part of the country. Camel curry and camel burgers are served as novelty foods for the culinarily curious Australian.

Looney_tunes has eaten the other three meats listed, but never (knowingly) camel. Ralph has issued an open invitation to all camelids to come for an extended visit - there's plenty of grass in the paddock, catering for a variety of tastes, and no camel burgers in sight.
2. Ralph went onward to Japan to try some East Asian fare in a Tokyo sushi joint. While attempting to operate a pair of chopsticks with his hooves, he didn't notice a plate of raw salmon being placed on his table. Which of these words would describe the thinly-sliced fish he'd been given?

Answer: Sashimi

Sashimi is a term that applies to most slices of raw meat served in Japanese restaurants, though most customers visiting a sushi restaurant (especially in the Western Hemisphere) would likely find fish on their plates. The most common sashimi meats include salmon, tuna, squid, and yellowtail. Many people know about puffer fish sashimi, also known as fugu, because it's quite poisonous if prepared incorrectly. Most sashimi is also served with sauce on the side (be it soy or otherwise).

Kyleisalive has asked that Ralph not invite him to dinners in which he needs to manage difficult utensils; he refuses to help and Ralph refuses to give in.
3. Unfortunately, some species that are considered gastronomic delicacies are also considered endangered. Which critically endangered delicacy originates in China and is the largest salamander in the world?

Answer: Chinese giant salamander

The Chinese giant salamander can reach up to 6 feet (180 cm) in length, inhabiting the mountain lakes and streams of China. One of the contributing factors to its endangerment is that it is the target of illegal hunting to be used as an exotic meal to those willing to pay for it. Ralph and maninmidohio both find this very upsetting.
4. Ralph was at a fancy restaurant and saw turducken on the menu. Curious as to what the strange item was, he ordered it. Upon seeing the turducken arrive, he lost his appetite and left the restaurant. Turducken is made by stuffing a bird inside another bird, which is then stuffed inside yet another bird. Which of these birds is generally the smallest bird of a turducken, and therefore the centermost meat of the dish?

Answer: Chicken

Turducken is made by stuffing a deboned chicken inside a deboned duck. That duck (with the chicken already inside, mind you), is then stuffed inside a deboned turkey. The large stuffed bird can be cooked by any method used for any individual bird, as long as the inside bird is cooked through as well.

Ralph is sickened just by the sight of so much meat within meat within meat. He and salami_swami will both pass on this offer.
5. Ralph found an interesting recipe on the Internet for horsemeat pie. What ingredient was NOT listed among those that went into the pie?

Answer: Flaked tuna

Ground horsemeat, onions, sweet red peppers (capsicums), mushrooms, and Cheddar cheese make the filling for the recipe which Ralph stumbled across. This is not your typical meat pie!

Neither Ralph nor maninmidohio is tempted to make this dish.
6. Ralph was munching at the salad bar when his host offered him some alligator wings. He was rather surprised, as he did not know that alligators had wings. What part of the alligator is used to make this delicacy?

Answer: Feet

The feet of an alligator can be separated into individual pieces which can then be cooked. The most popular recipes seem to attempt to produce a deep fried bit of meat with a spicy sauce, similar to Buffalo wings (another name that has Ralph shaking his head in bewilderment).

The tail meat of an alligator is said to be the most tender, but it isn't suitable for producing this snack food, which Ralph and Looney_tunes will leave for others to explore.
7. Ralph the llama was reading about the Inuit people who live in the cold Arctic regions of the planet. He found out that the meat from which animal makes up the largest part of the Inuit diet?

Answer: Seal

The Inuit live in an area of little foliage, so most of their diet consists of animal products. Although they may eat polar bear and whale if that is what is available, the primary meat in their diet is seal. They hunt seal year round, usually using a harpoon. When a seal is caught, it is offered a drink of fresh water by the Inuit who believe that all the animals of the sea are thirsty as the salt water is undrinkable. This is done as a token of gratitude to the seal who has sacrificed his life so that the Inuit may live. All parts of the seal are used. The blubber is scraped off and put into a barrel where it will dissolve into oil that is used for cooking, and occasionally for drinking. The bones are used to make harpoon points and needles. The skin is used for rope and clothing such as mukluk pants. The meat is usually boiled, and the liver is saved for the hunter as it is considered to be the most desirable part of the animal.

While dcpddc478 may admire the Inuit for their frugality and ingenuity in using the world around them, she is not tempted to buy an Inuit cookbook anytime soon.
8. What does Ralph learn one should call meat that has been grown in a laboratory?

Answer: Shmeat

Shmeat (or 'in vitro meat') may be the technology of the future, provided it can attract requisite research funding. The name is a shortening of 'sheet meat'. Cells are taken from a living animal and the meat is 'grown' by immersing these cells in a solution of nutrients and oxygen that replicates blood supply. In theory, the amount of meat that could be produced in this way from a single animal is virtually limitless. Small wonder that PETA has offered $1,000,000 to the first company that can bring laboratory-produced chicken to the market.

Ralph doesn't like the idea of anyone tucking into llama burgers, but he's happy to donate a few cells if it stops his brothers and sisters from being eaten. Glendathecat just likes tucking into burgers.
9. While visiting Eagle, Idaho for the "World's Largest Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed", Ralph got to watch thousands of people enjoying which of the following meat products?

Answer: Bull testicles

Rocky Mountain oysters are the testicles of a bull calf. Preparation involves peeling the skin off the testicle, pounding it flat, coating it in seasoned flour, and then deep frying. It is often consumed with a side of cocktail sauce. Other nicknames for this dish include the following: swinging beef, Montana tendergroins, dusted nuts, and cowboy caviar.

Without being judgemental, Ralph decided to pass on this local specialty. Ralph and dcpddc478 both think that a nice salad might be a better choice in this instance.
10. Ralph went to the supermarket and saw many different varieties of salami. He was not at all tempted to try any of the foul-smelling cured meats, and went on his way eating plants. While salami is most commonly made with pork or beef, some parts of Japan use a rather interesting type of flesh to make some forms of salami. What do they use?

Answer: Swordfish

Salami is a type of sausage that is cured, air-dried, and even fermented. The meat is popular because it has a shelf-life of about a month after being cut, without the use of refrigeration. Placing the meat in the fridge allows it to last much longer, of course. Salami comes in all different types, including a Japanese salami made with swordfish, and the occasional shark. There is even a variety of salami, known as 'nduja, which is spreadable, more like a paté than an actual sausage, though it is in the sausage and salami family.

Ralph dare not try salami; not only is he an herbivore but he also wouldn't want to hurt salami_swami's feelings.
