Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of a new ability from "Scars of Mirrodin" block which involves having at least three artifacts in play?

Answer: Metalcraft

Transmute means: "Discard this card: Search your library for a card with the same converted mana cost as this card, reveal it, and put it into your hand"

Modular means: "This enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. When it's put into a graveyard, you may put its +1/+1 counters on target artifact creature"

Affinity means: "This spell costs X less to play for each X you control"

If you control three or more artifacts you have assembled Metalcraft.
2. Another new ability in "Scars of Mirrodin" block causes creatures to deal damage in the form of poison and -1/-1 counters. What is the name of that ability?

Answer: Infect

It's not an entirely new ability, but a combination of two older abilities - Poisionous and Wither.
Some of the previous creatures that had a similar ability are: Crypt Cobra, Marsh Viper, Pit Scorpion, and Virulent Sliver.
3. "Scars of Mirrodin" block has a total of five planeswalkers. What are their names?

Answer: Elspeth, Karn, Koth, Tezzeret and Venser

Elspeth, Koth and Venser are from "Scars of Mirrodin", Tezzeret from "Mirrodin Besieged" and Karn from the "New Phyrexia" edition.

Jace, Sorin, Gideon, Garruk and Ajani are not from the "Scars of Mirrodin" block.
4. "Scars of Mirrodin" introduced us with a war. Who won the war?

Answer: The Phyrexians

The Phyrexians won this round. Though the war is over, the battle for Mirrodin continues.
5. From the "New Phyrexia" edition, what rare card prevents you from having poison counters?

Answer: Melira, Sylvok Outcast

Melira's Keepers can't have counters placed only on itself,
Sylvok Replica destroys an artifact or an enchantment when sacrificed and Barbarian Outcast is not from the "New Phyrexia" edition.
6. Which of the swords from "Scars of Mirrodin" block does NOT cause any cards to be moved as a result of damage to a player?

Answer: Sword of War and Peace

"Sword of War and Peace" deals damage to the opponent equal to the number of cards in his or her hand and you gain life for each card in yours thus giving you no real card advantage.

"Sword of Feast and Famine" untaps all your lands and makes the opponent discard,
"Sword of Body and Mind" mills his library and gives you a token, and of course
"Sword of Fire and Ice" is not from the "Scars of Mirrodin" block.
7. A skull with a spine floating above a corpse is the artwork of what "New Phyrexia" rare?

Answer: Surgical Extraction

Surgical Extraction is basically the same card as the former tournament staple Extirpate.
8. Who is the artist of Surgical Extraction?

Answer: Steven Belledin

Adam Rex, John Avon and Rob Alexander did not do any art for "New Phyrexia".
9. A rulings question: "If you play Etched Monstrosity and have Melira, Sylvok Outcast on the battlefield, does Melira's ability remove the counters from Etched Monstrosity and draws you three cards?"

Answer: Yes, but you don't get to draw cards

Melirea's static ability prevents your creatures to have any counters put on them, thus making Etched Monstrosity a vanilla 10/10, but that does NOT allow you to draw three cards. The draw results from Etched Monstrosity's activated ability, for which you have to pay its activation cost.
10. In the "New Phyrexia" edition, we have a new way to pay for mana cost of some cards. It's called "Phyrexian mana". How do you pay for a card costing one Phyrexian black mana?

Answer: One black mana or two life

Some of the more interesting cards with Phyrexian mana are: Dismember, Mental Misstep, Surgical Extraction, Tezzeret's Gambit and Gitaxian Probe.
