Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is "Black Bun"?

Answer: A rich fruit cake

This is a particular favourite of "Oor Wullie" and traditional at New Year.
2. What is the main ingredient of "Partan Bree"?

Answer: Crab

"Partans" are small, edible crabs. "Bree" is a soup or stock. So it's crab soup and also contains cream and rice.
3. Which of these is NOT an ingredient of "Cock-a-Leekie"?

Answer: Asparagus

Perhaps the name gave that one away a little ...
4. Haggis is traditionally made using a pig's bladder.

Answer: False

Of course not - everyone should know it's a sheep's stomach!
5. Which of the following dishes does NOT contain potatoes?

Answer: Crowdie

It is a type of cream cheese. "Rumbledethump" is like Colcannon, while "Clapshot" is a variation on tatties & neeps (potato & turnip).
6. What are "Jethart Snails"?

Answer: Boiled toffee sweets

The Scottish Borders is a great place to visit if you like cake and candy!
7. "Crappit Heids" is a type of Scottish soup.

Answer: False

Balls of oats, suet and fish liver are sealed in the cleaned head of a cod or haddock, and then boiled in seawater. It tastes better than it sounds. The cooking water can later be used as the basis for a soup, but the dish itself is not.
8. Which if the following is an insult, as opposed to an item of Scottish cuisine?

Answer: Glasgow Salad

It's aimed at the apparent poor Scottish diet and variously it can be: chips completely soaked in salt & vinegar; a plate of pie, chips & beans; or the green stuff left at the side of a plate at the end of a meal
9. How would leftover porridge traditionally have been dealt with?

Answer: Poured into a kitchen drawer

Once it had cooled, the crofter could take a slice with him out in the field.
10. How do you make a "crunchy pizza"?

Answer: Deep fry it

Alongside Deep-fried Mars Bars, these are delicious as a once-in-a-blue moon treat. Apparently you can now get Deep-fried Donner Kebabs as well, which don't sound as appealing!

Hope you enjoyed this quiz - thanks for playing!
