Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have been served with a fresh pot of English tea but what is missing if you have asked for a traditional Devon cream tea?

Answer: Clotted cream, strawberry jam, scones

The Ritz Hotel in London is well known for serving this extra special treat but the ingredients can also be purchased in any supermarket and made at home. The Devonshire method of serving cream tea is to slice a warmed scone in half, cover each half with clotted cream and then add strawberry jam on top.
2. Which of the following is the oldest known English cheese?

Answer: Cheshire

Cheshire cheese has been made in the north-west of England since the 12th century and was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is made of cow's milk, has a crumbly texture with a mild salty flavour.
3. Harry Ramsden's is well known for serving which food?

Answer: Fish and Chips

Harry Ramsden opened his first takeaway outlet in 1928 from a hut in Guiseley, Yorkshire. On its 21st birthday in 1952, a world record 10,000 people were served fish & chips. Nowadays, the restaurant is known worldwide for serving traditional favourites Cod and Haddock coated in Harry's secret batter recipe.
4. Which cake originated from Wiltshire, which is a major pig producing area in the south of England?

Answer: Lardy Cake

Lardy cake is famous in this pig producing region and showcases lard in an unexpected way. Equal amounts of lard, raisins or mixed fruit, and sugar are folded between layers of dough, similar to puff pastry.
5. What food is traditionally eaten during a Cockney Sunday tea?

Answer: Cockles and Winkles

England is an island nation and the majority of us love fish and shellfish. Cockles, winkles, mussels and shrimp are firm favourites and can now be found at any seaside resort served in a small plastic container with a dash of vinegar. They can be eaten with your fingers or by using a plastic fork.
6. It may sound disgusting but this food is another English favourite. What is 'Toad-in-the-Hole'?

Answer: Sausages in Batter

I would like to stress that there are no toads, frogs or any other forms of amphibious lifeform in a traditional Toad-in-the-Hole dish. The origins of Toad-in-the-Hole are very vague but it is believed that the recipe dates back to the early 18th century. The recipe consists of several good old British bangers (sausages) baked into a batter pudding.
7. Which of these do not originate from the north of England?

Answer: Bath Bun

Eccles cake were named after an English town called Eccles near Manchester. A stotty cake or stotty is a type of bread produced in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Yorkshire pudding originated from Yorkshire and is normally served with roast beef, vegetables and gravy. The Bath bun is a rich, sweet yeast dough shaped cake which originated from Bath in the south-west of England.
8. Which pie containing meat, potato and vegetables was eaten by tin miners in the south-west of England?

Answer: Cornish Pasty

The pasty is made by filling the pastry base with meat, potato and other vegetables before folding it to wrap the filling, crimping the edge to form a seal before baking. The tin miners were unable to return to the surface to eat lunch, and covered head to foot in dust, they could hold the pasty by the folded crust and eat the rest without touching it, discarding the dirty crust afterwards.
9. Which dish is served in English pubs and consists of a piece of cheese, a bit of pickle and pickled onion, and a chunk of bread?

Answer: Ploughman's Lunch

A lot of people believe that the traditional Ploughman's lunch originated from a bygone era, but it appears to have arisen during a cheese marketing campaign in the 1960s. While ploughmen and other workers certainly did have cold lunches with very similar ingredients, they probably did not refer to the meal as a 'ploughman's lunch'.
10. What is the main ingredient you would find in 'Gentleman's Relish'?

Answer: Anchovies

Gentleman's Relish is a type of anchovy paste. It was created in 1828 by an Englishman called John Osborn. The traditional way of eating Gentleman's Relish is on thin slices of buttered white bread toast, either on its own, or with cucumber, or mustard and cress.
