Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first offering comes from Thailand. These venomous arachnids are a delicacy there, and the canned form is ready cooked so they can be safely eaten. What are they?

Answer: Scorpions

Scorpions are considered a delicacy in most parts of Thailand. Virtually any species of the creature can be eaten, but care has to be taken to remove the venom. The canned variety is ready cooked with the venom already removed, so can be eaten straight from the tin without any extra preparation. Apparently it is best to eat them whole.
2. Russia gives us our next strange experience in a can. Canned Russian herrings consist only of which part of the fish?

Answer: Mouths

Canned Russian herrings are actually just fish mouths, complete with all the teeth, and those teeth are sharp. They come in a brine sauce, and are as far removed from the canned fish we are used to as it is possible to get. Apparently you are supposed to eat the teeth as well as the fish mouths.
3. Another eastern delicacy in a can: These bugs are sold as food on the streets of Korea, and are now available in tinned form. What do the Koreans offer to us?

Answer: Silk Worm Pupae

Cooked silk worm pupae are sold in the streets of Korea as a popular fast food item. The canned version comes with a sauce of indeterminate ingredients. Best eaten heated rather than cold, the can states that they are a BBQ flavour and a "tasty and nutritious snack".
4. Our next offering is canned marsupial. This small animal is native to Australia, but considered a pest in New Zealand. What do you think it is?

Answer: Possum

Canned possum is creamed, and comes complete with sweet potato and coon fat gravy. So a complete meal in a can if you like the idea of eating what is essentially a large rat. Any of the various varieties of possum are edible, and therefore eligible for the canning treatment.
5. Now why go to McDonald's when you can buy a cheeseburger in a can. Which country thought that canning this was a good idea?

Answer: Switzerland

Swiss company Katadyn thought that putting a cheeseburger in a can was the best idea since sliced bread. You get the burger, the cheese, the bun, lettuce, tomato and onion. Just heat and serve, in about the same time you could cook a fresh one at home.
6. A Scandinavian offering next. Not as disgusting as some, but you wouldn't want to eat this at Christmas. What native mammal have they turned into canned pate?

Answer: Reindeer

Described as an "indulgent Christmas delicacy" canned reindeer pate even says "farm raised relative of Rudolph" on the outside of the tin. Now you wouldn't want the children to see that on Christmas Day. It is at least nutritious as reindeer meat has virtually no fat.
7. Our next canned item comes to us from the Americas. When alive it has a leathery shell, sometimes called armour. Which creature have they canned?

Answer: Armadillo

Yes, you can buy a can containing creamed armadillo on the half shell. The picture on the tin is reminiscent of the way it would look if it had been run over. There is even a strange looking bird pecking at it. It is actually described as being of "turnpike quality".
8. All day breakfast in a can is strange. Even stranger is one of the ingredients, not something you would normally eat for breakfast. What is it?

Answer: Mini scotch egg

OK, you wouldn't eat any of those for breakfast, but the breakfast in a can contains mini scotch egg. The rest of the ingredients are baked beans, sausages, mushroom and bacon, all in tomato sauce. Why you would want to open a can and heat it when you could cook all of this in moments, without the scotch egg, is not explained.
9. Made from the spit of birds what delicacy has been canned into an energy drink?

Answer: Birds' Nests

Birds' nest soup, made from the nests of cave swifts, has long been regarded as a delicacy by the Chinese. They now offer a canned birds' nest energy drink. This is made in the same way as the soup, by dissolving the nests, but the end product is then made into a canned fizzy drink. So essentially it is fizzy, cold, birds' nest soup.
10. Take the organs of a sheep, season them, add oatmeal, then stuff them into the sheep's stomach, then can it. What Scottish delicacy is this?

Answer: Haggis

Those expatriate Scots who want to celebrate Burns Night no longer have to search high and low for their haggis, they can have it sent to them in a can. It comes ready cooked so only needs to be heated up to be ready to go for the big celebration. Haggis is something of an acquired taste in fresh form. The tinned one could well be even more so.
