Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you've maybe over-imbibed in spirits, you may be said to be "Three _______ to the wind". What word completes this idiom?

Answer: sheets

You may also be snockered, hammered, boiled, lit, etc. "Three sheets to the wind" isn't used much anymore, and obviously comes from the great age of iron men and wooden ships.
2. If someone is teasing you, or trying to fool you, he may be said to be "pulling your _________". Can you complete this one?

Answer: leg

He is "putting you on" or "trying to pull the wool over your eyes". This term didn't always have the benign meaning it has today. In 18th century London it referred to being tripped or knocked down by a criminal in order to confuse or frighten.
3. If, during a conversation, someone looks at you with a blank expression on their face, and you know they don't understand, you might say "The lights are on, but no one is ______________".

Answer: home

They just don't comprehend the invaluable information you are imparting. This is a recent addition to American jargon, in use for no more than the past 50 years or so.
4. If you want to question someone's intellectual capacity, you might say he's "dumber than a box of ___________". What completes this phrase?

Answer: rocks

Another expression, recently heard, was "a bag of hammers", or "bright as a small appliance bulb." "Box of rocks" is a fairly recent, but over-used, expression. Another oldie but goodie is, "If brains were dynamite, you couldn't blow your hat off."
5. If someone is "follically challenged", he has what condition?

Answer: he is bald

He may also be referred to as a "chrome dome", or as having a "beautiful head of skin".
6. If someone has trouble grasping what is going on around him, you may say "he is somewhere out in ______________". What place completes this saying?

Answer: left field

He may also be "on another planet", or "his elevator doesn't go clear to the top floor". "Left field" refers to a position in the outfield on a baseball diamond which is as removed from the action as you can get and still play the game.
7. If someone, especially a young person, seems to eat a lot, you might say he has a "hollow _________". Can you complete this one?

Answer: leg

Or he may be "a bottomless pit". The origins of "hollow leg" are obscure, but it's been around for at least 100 years. It's also used to describe a person who can drink large amounts of alcohol with no ill effects.
8. If something or someone is very entertaining and a lot of fun, you could say it's "more fun than a barrel of ___________". What's the word I'm looking for?

Answer: monkeys

As a pundit once said, though, if you compare monkeys and humans, it's usually an insult to the monkeys.
9. If you heard that someone had compared your new beau to a "mud fence", should you be insulted?

Answer: Yes

I would think so. The complete phrase is "homely as a mud fence". In Britain, I believe it's a "mud wall". This is another phrase which has murky origins. Very few people have ever seen a mud wall or a mud fence.
10. If someone needs to add a few pounds, you might say they are 'skinny as a __________". Can you complete this one?

Answer: rail

This phrase has been in use since the late 18th century and refers to a thin metal bar. "Beanpole" as another name use to describe thin people. Comedian Charlie Callas once described himself as "so skinny, that when I turn sideways and stick my tongue out, I look like a zipper."
