Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Aztec god of war, the sun, and the Aztec people?

Answer: Huitzilopochtli

Ahuizotl was actually an Aztec tlatoani, the Aztec term for speaker for the gods, who came in to power in the Aztec empire in 1486.
2. Who was the Aztec goddess of home and the hearth?

Answer: Chantico

Yacatechutli was the god of the pochtecas, a group of traders who travelled by night, who feared to remain in Tenochtitlan because of robbers.
3. Who was the Aztec god of rain?

Answer: Tlaloc

The Aztecs believed that Tlaloc's favorite sacrifice was that of young children during the springtime. If they gave up their children, they believed that Tlaloc would use their tears to give the Aztec's rain during the greatest season of harvesting.
4. Who was the Aztec god of dice and gambling?

Answer: Machuilxocitl

Coixtlahuaca was a city controlled by the Mixtec people, which was burned under the rule of Montezuma I. It is believed to be the first Aztec conquest during the rule of Montezuma I.
5. Which of these neighboring Aztec empires did not believe in the Aztec religion?

Answer: The Mixtecs

Cuauhtemoc was the Aztec tlatoani during the final days of the existence of the Aztec empire.
6. Which god or goddess sacrificed themselves at the beginning of history so that the Aztecs could live?

Answer: All of them

This is why the Aztecs believed that they must constantly offer the gods sacrifices, or they would abandon them.
7. Who was the Aztec god of springtime?

Answer: Xipe Totec

Xipe Totec is the only Aztec god or goddess I know of that has two separate parts to his name.
8. Who was the Aztec god of the dead?

Answer: Mictlantecuhtli

Mictlantecuhtli is very much associated with the dead, as all persons who die, other than sacrifices to the gods, women who die in childbirth, and men who die in battle, go to a place called Mictlan when they die.
9. When sacrifices to the gods, women who die in childbirth, or men who die in battle die, they become companions of the sun for five years. After this time, what happens to them?

Answer: They return to the earth as butterflies or hummingbirds

I have also heard that they are allowed to return as goldfish and lizards as well, but I don't know if that was really believed by the Aztec people.
10. What color did Aztec priests paint their bodies?

Answer: Black

This wasn't for any religious reason. This was only to show to others that they were true priests.
11. Who was the Aztec goddess of maize?

Answer: Chimecoatl

Tezcalipoca was the Aztec god of fate and all of creation. He even created the other gods.
12. Who was the Aztec goddess of lakes and streams?

Answer: Chalchiuhtlicue

I think that Chalchiuhtlicue is the longest named god ever to exist.
13. If an Aztec boy wishes to become a priest, he must be in a calmecac school as opposed to a telpochcalli school.

Answer: True

Calmecac schools are very difficult, but the only way to have a job such as a priest, tlatoani, general, or scribe, is to attend a calmecac school. Telpochcalli students will more likely become a soldier or a farmer.
14. The square of the Great Temple is open only to nobles.

Answer: True

This is true, no commoner is permitted to step in the Great Square, unless of course they are being sacrificed.
15. After which god or goddess is the Snake Woman named after?

Answer: Cihuacoatl

Cihuacoatl is the god of society.
