Tenochtitlan was a city he was a patron of; in addition, he was a warfare god and sun god. In his family, Coatlicue was his mother, his father was sometimes said to be Mixcoatl, and Malinalxochit was his rival and sister. He guided the Aztecs to the future site of Tenochtitlan, and told them to look for an eagle on a cactus, eating a snake.

When they found it, they built Tenochtitlan. Uitzilopochtli is an alternate spelling of Huitzilopochtli.
