Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which province did Marilla and Matthew adopt Anne?

Answer: Nova Scotia

In the number "The Facts," Anne tells her heart-rending story of being bounced around from one horrible foster home to another.
2. Why did the Cuthbert siblings decide they should adopt an orphan?

Answer: To help Matthew around the farm

Matthew had suffered a heart attack the previous spring, so they needed a boy to help around the farm.
3. Why did Anne say she liked Diana's name?

Answer: Diana is her "favourite heathen goddess"

Anne's mother's name was Bertha and her father was Walter. He was a teacher of "agriculture and rapid calculation."
4. The last big number of the first act was the whole cast singing "Humble Pie."

Answer: false

The last scene of the first act featured the entire cast (excluding Marilla, Matthew and Miss Stacey) singing the memorable "Ice Cream." Anne and Matthew sang "Humble Pie" in a duet earlier in the first act.
5. When she arrived in Avonlea, what food had Anne never heard of, let alone tried?

Answer: Ice Cream

Anne tries ice cream for the first time at the Sunday School picnic. She was almost not allowed to go because the Avonlea gossip mill informed Marilla that she had hospitalized Gilbert Blythe. Of course, she had not.
6. With what name had Gilbert Blythe teased Anne that made her fly into a rage?

Answer: Carrots

This part is the same as LM Montgomery's book: Gilbert calls Anne "Carrots" and she turns around and smashes her slate over his head.
7. Which one of the Avonlea boys put a frog in Anne's dress on the field trip?

Answer: Gilbert Blythe

She gets him back by removing the frog from her bloomers and putting it down his shirt collar.
8. What narrative from the book IS included in the musical?

Answer: Diana getting drunk on currant wine

All of these incedents are featured in the 1986 movie "Anne of Green Gables," but they are not all in the Musical. Good thing, too- the musical runs for about 2.5 hours as it is!
9. Miss Stacy tells the children that she will be taking over for Mr. Phillips for what reason?

Answer: He got a better job

Everyone knows the real reason, though, and Gilbert is brave enough to mention it: "I heard he HAD to marry Prissy Andrews!" Mr. Phillips and Prissy were notoriously fond of each other.
10. At the end of the musical, where does Matthew die?

Answer: In the kitchen at Green Gables

In the novel, Matthew dies on the porch. In the movie, he dies in the field with Anne. In the musical, he is first visibly ill at the school pageant and leaves early with Marilla. If Matthew's death scene isn't sad enough, then Marilla sings the reprise to "The Words." What a great musical.
