Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ares hailed from this city, home of a fierce people.

Answer: Thrace

Thrace was the only city in which Ares was regularly worshipped. In Rome, Mars was associated with agriculture as well as war and offerings were made to him for both victory and fertile crops.
2. This carrion bird was Ares' favorite. Rather appropriate in my opinion.

Answer: Vulture

Ares' animal was the dog and his symbol the spear. He rode on a great chariot with spear and shield, covered in gleaming armor.
3. In battle, Ares wore a shining helmet and was accompanied by his sister, Eris, which means "discord." Name her son, who also accompanied them.

Answer: Strife

Famine and Oblivion were also followers of Ares.
4. Though Ares was hated in Greece, he certainly had some impressive companions. He was also accompanied by the goddess of war, whose name in Latin is "Bellona". By what name did the Greeks know her?

Answer: Enyo

Following Enyo are Terror, Trembling, and Panic (Deimos). Rivers of blood and screams of agony were said to follow in their wake. Cheery fellows.
5. Most of the other gods didn't like Ares anymore than the Greeks, his half-brother Hephaestus especially. Hephaestus disliked him so much because of Ares' affair with his wife Athena.

Answer: False

Hephaestus' wife was Aphrodite. He caught the two of them in a net of adamant (an unbreakable metal) and showed them to the other gods. It must have been a comical scene. Perhaps the reason for Aphrodite's adultery was her detestation of her husband. She was the goddess of love and was married to the lame and ugly god of the forge.
6. Yet another of Ares' companions was his son, whose name means "fear." Name him.

Answer: Phobos

7. Ares also had a daughter by an Amazonian queen. Name this mother of Hippolytus.

Answer: Antiope

Antiope was carried off by Theseus while still an Amazonian queen herself. The Amazons pursued him all the way to Athens where he eventually defeated them.
8. The Romans liked Mars so much that they made him the father of the mythical founders of their homeland. Name these twin brothers raised by wolves and shepherds.

Answer: Romulus and Remus

Romulus received more land than Remus to build on. Remus became angry with him and confronted his brother. Romulus killed him and named the city after himself. Perhaps there was a bit too much of their father in them.
9. The mother of Romulus and Remus was a Vestal virgin named Rhea Silvia whom Ares raped. She was then punished for breaking her vows.

Answer: True

Vesta was the Roman form of Hestia, Zeus's sister and goddess of the hearth. She was a virgin goddess and all of her priestesses were required to be virgins. It seems strange that the Romans would have been so fond of Mars and yet attributed such ghastly crimes to him.
10. Ares was certainly an unsettling fellow; his throne was covered in human skin. The Greeks no doubt thought it justified when they had him lose in combat to a mere mortal, powerful though he was. Name the heroic son of Zeus who defeated him.

Answer: Heracles

Though more commonly known by his Roman name, Hercules, Heracles wounded Ares in the thigh while fighting the Pylians.
Another embarrassing moment for Ares was a time he was nearly killed by two giants who trapped him in a jar. Hermes had to rescue him.
