Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Goddess is the patron Goddess of civilization and her main sanctuary is located at the acropolis in Athens.

Answer: Athena

The Athenian Acropolis is the highest point in Athens. Athena fought with Poseidon to be the patron Goddess of Athens. They had a contest that whoever could deliver the best gift to Athens would win its patronage. Athena gave Athens the olive tree, while Poseidon struck his trident into the ground and gave them a salt water spring.

The Athenians decided that the olive tree was more useful than salt water, so Athena won the patronage of the city!
2. This God is wed to the daughter of Demeter, and has an unusual pet dog.

Answer: Hades

Hades, the God of the underworld, is wed to Persephone, Demeter's daughter, and his 3-headed dog, Cerberus, guards the gates of Hades.
3. This Goddess is forever a virgin. Her mother is Leto, and she has a twin brother who is the patron God of music.

Answer: Artemis

Artemis and Apollo were twins born from Leto, and their father is Zeus. Artemis is a virgin Goddess, like her half-sister Athena. Hestia was originally one of the 6 older Olympian Gods, but she is replaced by Dionysus.
4. Known as Vulcan in Roman myth, this God is married to the Goddess Aphrodite.

Answer: Hephaestus

In revenge for Zeus bearing Athena all by himself, Hera decided to have a child parthenogenically. This child was Hephaestus, the God of the smithy. He is usually depicted with one or more limp legs, and some say that he is impotent, although he is married to the Goddess of sexual love, Aphrodite.
5. If you ever run into a serpent guarding a freshwater spring, as Cadmus did, you will probably have to answer to this God.

Answer: Ares

Ares, known as Mars in Roman myth, was the least-worshiped of the Olympian 12 in ancient Greece. Almost every spring that heroes encounter in ancient myth is guarded by a monster belonging to Ares. Cadmus, the founder of Thebes, slew a dragon belonging to Ares, and as penance, had to serve him for 7 years.

When his term was up, he received Ares' daughter, Harmonia, as his wife. When the couple died, they became the rulers of the Islands of the Blessed.
6. True or False: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are brothers.

Answer: True

Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are all brothers, the sons of Kronos and Rhea. Zeus is the King of the Gods, Poseidon is the God of the sea, and Hades rules the underworld, aptly named Hades.
7. This God of wine married Ariadne, whom he found on Naxos, and lives with her on the island sacred to Hephaestus.

Answer: Dionysus

On his trip back to Greece from the west, Dionysus finds Ariadne on Naxos, and marries and settles with her on the island of Lemnos.
8. This God is closely associated with 9 daughters of Zeus, and has no luck in love. He once chased a girl, only to have her turn into the laurel tree rather than be with him.

Answer: Apollo

Apollo is the God of music, and is usually seen with the Muses, 9 daughters of Zeus. The girl he chased was a nymph by the name of Daphne.
9. This God has a son by the name of Triton, and is often in conflict with Athena.

Answer: Poseidon

Poseidon has a son with his wife, Amphitrite, named Triton, who uses his conch shell to calm the seas. He is in conflict with Athena because he is the God of the sea and horses, and Athena invented the ship and the saddle to tame both.
10. This is the Queen of the Gods, in an incestuous marriage with her brother.

Answer: Hera

Hera is the wife of Zeus, and the Queen of the Gods, and don't you forget it!
