Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Poseidon's chosen symbol of power?

Answer: Trident

Poseidon's famous three-pronged spear, also called a trident, was a gift to him from the cyclopes, who also gave Zeus his thunderbolt and Hades his helm of darkness. They had acquired these after their victory over the Titans.
2. Poseidon was always at loggerheads with which god for power over Olympus, and therefore the world?

Answer: Zeus

Many a time there was a situation where Olympus was at the edge of war simply because the two brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, were fighting over a petty issue such as whether sea disasters were more spectacular than air disasters, or Mother Rhea always liked me better, etc., etc. Scholars debate over which son, Zeus or Poseidon, Mother Rhea saved from Cronus, and thus who was the ACTUAL rightful king of Olympus; according to most, it was Zeus.
3. Which goddess did Poseidon rally against for being the patron of Athens?

Answer: Athena

According to Greek legend, Poseidon gave the city of Athens the first spring of freshwater and Athena gave them the first olive tree. The elders of Athens decided that the olive tree would be of more use to them than the freshwater spring, so they made Athena the patron goddess of Athens and even named their city after her.
4. Who was Amphitrite to Poseidon?

Answer: Wife

Amphitrite, Poseidon's wife, was one of the fifty Nereids. All the Nereids wanted Poseidon for their own except Amphitrite, who was very shy. Obviously, Poseidon was attracted to her as she was the quietest, and after much persuasion she agreed to be his wife. Lord Delphinius, the king of dolphins, persuaded and pleaded with her to make this decision, as he had been requested by Poseidon to do so.
5. Who was Poseidon's only divine son?

Answer: Triton

Triton was Poseidon's child by Amphithitre. He was known as the messenger of seas, and was a merman. His upper body was that of a normal man, while his lower body was the tail of a fish. He was very faithful to his parents (Poseidon and Amphithitre).
6. Which one of these was NOT a title of Poseidon?

Answer: The King of Gods

'The King of Gods' was the most famous of Zeus's titles. Poseidon was referred to as Earthshaker and Stormbringer because both of these titles more or less refer to turbulence that originates under the sea and then moves onto the land. They call Poseidon the Father of Horses because he created the first horses out of sea foam.
7. Which of these giants was born to oppose Poseidon?

Answer: Polybotes

According to mythology, twelve giants were born to Gaia, each to oppose a certain Olympian (God). Polybotes was born to oppose Poseidon, and water turned to poison when he touched it.
8. Which son of Poseidon was a horse?

Answer: Arion

Arion, the son of Demeter and Poseidon, was a white stallion. The reason for this was that Demeter turned herself into a mare to avoid Poseidon's advances and Poseidon turned into a stallion who mated with her. Thus Arion was born. According to legend, Arion fed on gold nuggets.
9. Which of these sea animals were closely associated with Poseidon?

Answer: Dolphins

Lord Delphinius, the King of Dolphins, helped Poseidon by persuading Amphithitre to marry Poseidon. After this, Poseidon and Delphius became good friends. Since then Poseidon has closely been associated with dolphins.
10. Who was the goddess of giant sea storms and also the daughter of Poseidon?

Answer: Kymopoleia

Kympoleia was the daughter of Poseidon. She was very miserable because she thought Poseidon no longer cared about her, as she was condemned to live in the most isolated part of the sea, where Poseidon's old castle's remains stood. Her sadness and anger created disturbances in the sea.
