Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Handsome, capable fighter and brother to Gawain and Gareth

Answer: Agravain

Sir Agravain (sometimes spelled Agravaine) is one of the Knights of the Round Table. According to Arthurian legend he is seen as a handsome and strong fighter in the adventures of the "Vulgate Cycle". While known for participating in heroic deeds like his brothers Gawain and Gareth, he also has a dark side and is a noted villain. According to legend, Agravain was killed by Lancelot.
2. Returns Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake

Answer: Bedivere

Sir Bedivere is one of the trusted knights and a strong supporter of King Arthur during the earlier years of his reign. Bedivere is one of the first to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along with King Arthur, Bedivere is one of the survivors during the Last Battle and ultimately is given permission to throw Excalibur back into the hands of the Lady of the Lake.

He would ultimately give his life during the Roman Campaign.
3. Son of a villain appearing in "Le Morte d'Arthur"

Answer: Claudin

Prince Claudin is the son of the Frankish King Claudas. Claudas himself is an opponent of King Arthur and is ultimately defeated by Arthur, Bors, and Lionel to take back the lands of Ban and Bors. Claudin, on the other hand, wants no part in his father's villainous activity. He is virtuous in nature and ultimately becomes one of only twelve knights to obtain the Holy Grail.
4. King Arthur's jester

Answer: Dagonet

Sir Dagonet sees himself as a courageous warrior and often battles his own shield. Unfortunately, this is just a ruse and he often cowers at the slightest of provocation. He is often used to play pranks or jokes on the enemy as an act of trickery.
5. Daughter of King Pellinore

Answer: Elaine of Listenoise

"Elaine" is a fairly common name used in Arthurian legend. In fact, there are at least seven "Elaine's"; Elaine of Astolat, Elaine of Benoic, Elaine of Corbenic, Elaine of Garlot, Elaine the Peerless, Elaine the Younger, and, of course, Elaine of Listenoise, who all play different roles in the stories. Elaine of Listenoise tragically kills herself after the death of Sir Miles of the Laundes, her lover.

In some scenarios, such as in Role Playing Games (RPGs) like "The Black Hart of Camelot", she is presumed to become the princess and heir of "the Isles" or "Land of Listenoise".
6. Parzival's half-brother

Answer: Feirefiz

Feirefiz is son of an interracial relationship between Gahmuret and Queen Belacane. Despite his "black and white" patched skintone, he later triumphs as a knight and then a king. He sadly grows up as a heathen, but following his conversion to Christianity, he ultimately gains happiness in the Grail community.

After meeting his half-brother, Parzival, the two initially despise one another and nearly kill each other until Parzival's sword broke in; Feirefiz graciously yields due to his respect for Parzival. Following their initial fight, they recognize each other as brothers.
7. Illegitimate son of Lancelot and Elaine

Answer: Galahad

Sir Galahad is one of the Knights of the Round Table and illegitimate son of Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic. As the legend goes, King Pelles the father of Elaine, uses deception by way of a magic ring that transforms her appearance to look like Guinevere (Galahad's true love). Lancelot and Elaine (appearing to be Guinevere) sleep together and conceive a son, Galahad.

While Lancelot is forgiving of the situation, he would ultimately give up Galahad to be raised in a nunnery. During adulthood, he would be reunited with Lancelot to seek for the Holy Grail.

He seems to complete knighthood with ease and was once proclaimed by Arthur to be the greatest knight of all time after accomplishing the removal of the sword from the stone with ease.
8. Imprisoned by Sir Turquine

Answer: Hector de Maris

Sir Hector de Maris is the younger half-brother of Lancelot. He plays many roles in the King Arthur series, including the welcoming of Sir Tristan to Camelot following a nearly deadly shipwreck, his involvement in many jousting tournaments and his participation in the search for the Holy Grail.

Although he did journey to find the Holy Grail, he was one of the many knights who were unsuccessful in discovering it. He is loyal to Lancelot and proves to be one of the top leaders within Lancelot's branch participating in the battle to rescue Guinevere from her execution.
9. Mother of King Arthur

Answer: Igraine

Igraine is initially married to Gorlois and gives birth to three daughters - Elaine, Morgause, and Morgan le Fay. She later becomes the wife of Uther Pendragon, the legendary king of sub-Roman Britain. After Merlin magically disguises Uther as Gorlois, he sleeps with Igraine and they produce the illegitimate King Arthur. Following Gorlois' death in battle that same night, Uther Pendragon and Igraine get married.
10. First keeper of the Holy Grail

Answer: Joseph of Arimathea

According to Christian Canonical texts, Joseph was the man ultimately responsible for the burial of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion. In Arthurian legend, however, his role is quite different. As he is the first person to keep the Holy Grail, his job is risky and he is often imprisoned.

The stories surrounding him are an extension of the "Acts of Pilate". Upon his release from prison, the Holy Grail is believed to have ended up in Britain. Although considered to be a holy man, he does not make the journey to Britain with the grail, but instead leaves this to a group of followers.

His son, Josephus of Arimathea, is considered to be the primary holy man in Britain, not his father who chose not go to Britain with the grail. Upon his death, he passes the Holy Grail to Alan and from this point forward, King Arthur's court will forever become preoccupied with the search for the Holy Grail.
