Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the French tradition, Arthur's sword is named Excalibur. What was its earliest English title?

Answer: Caliburn

The original Welsh name was Caledfwlch, which was Latinised to Caliburnus (shortened to Caliburn in English) by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century. In turn, this name became Excalibur when the French started writing about the legend. Although most English speakers would be more familiar with the last, it is not the original Anglicised version of the sword's name.
2. What is the name of Lancelot's castle?

Answer: Joyous Gard

Where he flees to with Guinevere, before Arthur and his Knights go after him.
3. Who throws Excalibur back into the Lake, when Arthur is dying?

Answer: Bedevere

Arthur had to order him several times though, as he was very reluctant.
4. What was magic about Arthur's scabbard?

Answer: It stopped him from losing any blood

He later lost it when Morgaine threw it into the lake, and it was never seen again.
5. Who, along with Mordred, traps Lancelot and Guinevere in a compromising position, forcing Arthur to act?

Answer: Aggravaine

He is killed by Lancelot soon after.
6. What was the famous dowry that came with Guinevere?

Answer: Round Table

Which famously began being associated with Arthur's noble knights. It was said to have been able to seat 500 men.
7. What was King Vortigern told to do by his magicians in order to successfully build his fortifications?

Answer: Mix the blood of a fatherless man into the foundations

Merlin met this criterion, but escaped this fate by informing Vortigern that the walls kept collapsing because the foundations lay above a pool in which two dragons slept.
8. Tristram comes to a tragic end when he famously falls in love with___?

Answer: Iseult

The story of their tragic love has been the subject of many medieval and modern retellings.
9. The popular text on which we base most of our knowledge of Arthurian legends today was written by whom?

Answer: Sir Thomas Malory

Whilst Geoffrey of Monmouth was one of his main sources, Maloy's 'Le Morte D'arthur' is the text that most modern authors writing novels surrounding the legend rely heavily on.
10. What was Guinevere's fate after the fall of Arthur?

Answer: She spent her remaining days in a convent

It was her beloved Lancelot that became the hermit. Thanks for playing!
