1. In classic Japanese 'kabuki' theater, all of the roles are played by...?

Answer: Men

Kabuki, a form of Japanese theater which developed in the 17th century, emphasizes formalized techniques and movements, always accompanied by music. Men who play the roles of women in these plays are called 'onnagata'.
2. Which type of clay is essential in the creation of true Chinese porcelain?

Answer: Kaolin

Kaolin is a soft clay, easily workable in the production of fine ceramics. For porcelain, kaolin is combined with petuntse (feldspar/quartz mixture) to create the famous white Chinese porcelain we are all very familiar with.
3. The Japanese syllabic scripts often employed in calligraphic works are collectively called what?

Answer: Kana

The two syllabic scripts are 'hiragana' and 'katakana', and are juxtaposed with the 'kanji' script which is composed of Chinese characters.

Answer: True

The term 'kimono' is unisex, but of course there are different kimono styles for women and for men. One difference has to do with where the 'obi' (sash) is worn. For women, it's around the waist but for men it's around the hips.

The Kamakura period, which followed the Heian period, saw the full blossoming of Buddhist influence, Buddhism having arrived several centuries earlier from China via Korea. The dominant force in Buddhism during this time was Zen, with its two sects...Rinzai and Soto, and its effect on Japanese art is wonderful to behold!
