Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Prologue," the first song of the show, what city does the scene with the chain gang take place in?

Answer: Toulon

"Prologue" is the song with the chain gang in it. During the song, Jean Valjean is introduced. The song takes place in the year of 1815, in Toulon, France.
2. What is the name of the rude man who wants to "use Fantine's services" when she becomes a prostitute?

Answer: Bamatabois

Bamatabois is the wealthy "customer" of Fantine. He is drunk and wants to buy Fantine's services. She refuses to do so, and he drives her to violence. He then lies and says that she attacked him.
3. What is the name of the man who gets crushed under a cart and is saved by Jean Valjean?

Answer: Fauchelevant

Fauchelevant is the cart-crash victim. Jean Valjean, who is the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer and goes by Monsieur Madelaine, saves him. Javert sees this and is amazed that a man of Madelaine's age could lift such a heavy weight. The only man he knows that could do that is Jean Valjean, who had broken his parole years before.
4. What is Valjean's prisoner number?

Answer: 2-4-6-0-1

Jean Valjean was prisoner 2-4-6-0-1. Contrary to popular belief, when Valjean unbuttons his shirt to show Javert the brand on his chest, the brand is a rectangular mark and is not a number.
5. In the song, "The Bargain," Valjean works out a price with the Thenardiers so that he may take Cosette. The Thenardiers pretend to treat Cosette very well, but Thenardier calls her by the wrong name. By what name did he call Cosette?

Answer: Colette

Thenardier says, "Let's not haggle for darling Colette." Madame Thenardier whispers, "Cosette," and Thenardier quickly corrects himself.
6. At what cafe do the students congregate?

Answer: The ABC Cafe

The ABC Cafe was the students' meeting place. The "Les Miserables High School Edition" script gives an interesting fact about the cafe. It says, "ABC as pronounced in French makes the word 'abaisse' which means the underdog." Although the script gives this information, it is faulty. Abaisse actually means "lower" or "abased," which still makes sense, since the revolutionaries were the underdogs of the battle.
7. Which French general's "death is the sign [the students] await" for the start of their fighting at the barricade?

Answer: Lamarque

General Lemarque was the only French leader that took pity on the poor. After his death, the students decide that the time for their uprising is now.
8. What is Marius' last name? *Pay attention to spelling!*

Answer: Pontmercy

Marius' last name is Pontmercy. During the song, "A Heart Full of Love," Marius and Cosette introduce themselves. At the beginning of the song, they sing about their love for each other, yet they don't even know each other's names, but they introduce themselves as the song progresses.
9. What does Thenardier steal from Marius' seemingly dead body in the sewers?

Answer: a ring

Thenardier searches the revolutionaries' dead bodies looking for things of worth. All the students died at the barricade, save for a wounded Marius and an unconscious Valjean. Valjean awakes and musters up enough energy to carry Marius through the sewers to safety. He collapses in the sewers, and Thenardier comes upon them.
10. Finish the famous "Les Miserables" quote: "To love another person is to see the face of _____."

Answer: God

This is the last line before the entire cast sings a haunting, yet empowering reprise of "Do You Hear the People Sing" at the finale of the show.
"Do you hear the people sing? Say, do you hear the distant drums? It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes. Ah! Tomorrow comes!"
