Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "My name is Elder Price And I would like to share with you The most amazing book" These lyrics can be found in which song, which is the first in the play?

Answer: Hello

The song "Hello" opens the musical and introduces the audience to the missionaries and their method of going door to door to introduce people to the Book of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This opening song is a training exercise that highlights Elder Cunningham, a compulsive liar and inadequate trainee. "Book of Mormon" debuted on Broadway in 2011 with Josh Gad in the role of Elder Cunningham. Gad is very well known for voicing Olaf in "Frozen" and playing LeFou in the 2017 version of "Beauty and the Beast."
2. "When I was young my dad, Would treat my mom real bad, every time the Utah Jazz would lose" These are lyrics from which song about hiding your feelings?

Answer: Turn It Off

The song "Turn it Off" features all the missionaries who are on a mission together in Uganda. When our two newest members, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham meet the group, they learn that there have been no successful conversions. Elder Price is feeling nervous about the mission and the gang breaks into the song "Turn it Off" which is all about pushing your nervous or negative thoughts deep down inside and pretending you don't have them.

This upbeat number with rather dark lyrics includes a dance break and a costume change.
3. In which song do these lyrics appear? "It could be San Fran by the bay, Australia where they say "G'day!"

Answer: Two By Two

The song "Two By Two" appears pretty early on in Act I of the musical and it is in this song that Elders Price and Cunningham learn that they will be paired together and sent to Uganda for their mission. The other pairs learn about their destinations - France, Norway, Japan - and the lyrics are full of funny stereotypes about each location (pastries, gnomes and Mothra). Andrew Rannells initially played the role of Elder Price.

He was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in this musical as well as the following year for his role in the musical "Falsettos".

He won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album as a featured soloist on the original cast recording of "Book of Mormon".
4. "But this time, it's helping A dozen people! It's nothing so bad, because this time, I'm not committing a sin" These lyrics are sung by Elder Cunningham in which song?

Answer: Making Things Up Again

Elder Cunningham (first name Arnold) helps out by teaching the villagers in Uganda about the Book of Latter-Day Saints; however, they find it quite boring and so, being the compulsive liar that he is, he starts to intertwine science fiction and pop culture into the lessons, which make them quite interesting but far from what he's supposed to be teaching them.

In the song "Making Things Up Again", his conscience, personified by his dad, Darth Vader, Joseph Smith and Yoda amongst others, are telling him to stop making up stories.

He rationalizes what he's doing because, after all, he's helping people.
5. "Long ago when I was five, I snuck in the kitchen late at night And ate a donut with a maple glaze. My father asked who ate the snack I said that it was my brother Jack, And Jack got grounded for 14 days. I've lived with that guilt All of my life And the terrible vision That I had that night!" These anxious lyrics are from which song?

Answer: Spooky Mormon Hell Dream

Our idealistic Elder Price believes that he is destined for greatness but also that this greatness will take place in Orlando, Florida not Uganda. His dream is to get to Orlando and after he abandons his mission and asks for a transfer there, he has an actual dream that he arrives in Orlando.

When he realizes it's all a dream, his dream turns to a terrible nightmare that stars Adolf Hitler, Genghis Khan, Johnny Cochrane and Jeffrey Dahmer. His nightmare is so terrifying and influential that he decides he can't abandon his mission after all.
6. Which song has these lyrics? "Time to be a hero And slay the monster! Time to battle darkness, You're not my father!"

Answer: Man Up

Elder Cunningham, usually a second fiddle to greater men, has to step into the spotlight and help out with the mission in Uganda after Elder Price abandons him and his post. The song "Man Up" is Elder Cunningham realizing that he needs to learn by the example Jesus set and do what he needs to, even if it is going to be difficult.

This song closes out Act I and includes bits and pieces of other songs featured in Act I, bringing it all together before Act II begins. It is in a rock and roll style, with big, guttural vocals.
7. A song sung by Elders Price and Cunningham, which song contains these lyrics? "Something incredible... I'll do something incredible! I want to be the Mormon... That changed all of mankind..."

Answer: You and Me (But Mostly Me)

After Elder Price and Elder Cunningham learn that they are to paired up for their mission to Uganda, they break into this song and we learn that Elder Price has a dream to do something amazing and to go to Orlando, Florida. We learn that Elder Cunningham is content to just kind of follow Elder Price around, playing second fiddle or being a not so great sidekick.

There are lots of funny references in this song about simply being a side dish or a sidekick and being completely excited about that role.
8. "That was found by a HIP new prophet Who had a little... Donny Osmond flair?" Which song includes these funky lyrics?

Answer: All American Prophet

The song " All American Prophet" is a way to teach the villagers all about Joseph Smith and his history. Elder Price takes the lead on it and tells Smith's story through song while Elder Cunningham pipes in now and then with humorous takes on history that mix in science fiction references. Toward the end of the song, it becomes all about Elder Price and his desire to become the next great prophet.
9. Which great Elder Price song contains these lyrics? "It was supposed to be all so exciting. To be teaching of Christ across the sea. But I allowed my faith to be shaken- Oh, what's the matter with me?"

Answer: I Believe

Elder Price has a moment where he doesn't think he can continue on his mission in Uganda and he decides to abandon everyone; however, he does have a change of heart and it is through his song that he demonstrates that. He returns back to the village and decides to confront a warlord general that is terrorizing the villagers which leads to violent but hilarious consequences for Elder Price. Brian Tyree Henry played the original part of the General on Broadway when the musical first opened and has also had starring roles in "Atlanta", "Widows" and "If Beale Street Could Talk".
10. There are very few words from this song that don't contain explicit language; these are some of them: "Even though their prophet had died, The Mormons stuck together, And helped each other, And were really nice to everyone they came across." Which song is this?

Answer: Joseph Smith American Moses

Oh boy, what to say about this song. Elder Cunningham, the compulsive liar and science fiction fan, has shared all kinds of lies with the villagers in Uganda however he has gotten them quite excited about religion and has converted them. The mission President is so happy with this he decides to travel to Uganda to see what they've learned and they share that with him through this song, which is untruthful, explicit and quite appalling. Everyone is upset and the mission President orders all the missionaries out of Uganda.

While this is happening, though, Elder Price has a realization that it isn't the exactness of the message and the Scriptures that count but the sentiment behind it and the impact that has. In a hilarious ending, the converted Ugandans are now going door to door with their "Book of Arnold" and the play ends where it started, with the new missionaries singing "Hello."
