Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The actor playing Doctor Pangloss also plays which role?

Answer: Voltaire

Jim Dale played Doctor Pangloss, who teaches that this world is "the best of all possible worlds." Voltaire sought to discredit the idea that everything that happens is for the best, and Pangloss is a parody of the philosopher Gottfried Leibinz.

Jim Dale was nominated for a Tony for his role in "Candide". His other stage credits include "Me and My Girl" and "Barnum".
2. Jason Danieley played the title role. Which song is a solo sung by him?

Answer: It Must Be So

'It Must Be So" is the first song sung by Candide alone. "Oh Happy We" and "You Were Dead, You Know" are duets sung by Candide and Cunegonde. "Ballad of the New World" opened the second act.

Jason Danieley's other stage credits include "The Full Monty" and "Children and Art".
3. Candide and Pangloss run afoul of the Spanish Inquisition. By burning these "heretics", what does the Holy Mother Church hope to avoid?

Answer: Earthquakes

Candide and Pangloss are both Protestants, and thus are inevitably at odds with the Catholic Inquisitors. Although Candide is flogged and Pangloss is seemingly hanged, neither dies.
4. After reunting with Cunegonde in the song "You Were Dead, You Know", whom does Candide kill?

Answer: The Jew and the Grand Inquisitor

Candide mistakenly kills the Jew but kills the Grand Inquisitor on purpose. Because of this, Candide, Cunegonde and the Old Lady are forced to flee.
5. Maximillian, Cunegonde's brother, is in Cartagena. What is he dressed as?

Answer: A female slave

The amorous Governor of Cartagena falls in love with Maximillian, only to be unpleasantly surprised. His gender discovered, Maximillian is sold to the Jesuits.
6. Maximillian, Paquette and Candide all meet each other in Montevideo. Which one of them is killed?

Answer: Maximillian

Maximillian is "killed" by Candide in a family feud. However, characters in the show have a habit to keep on living even when suffering wounds that would usually kill a person.
7. Which kind of animal inhabits El Dorado, where Candide and Paquette find themselves?

Answer: Sheep

The gold-carrying sheep of El Dorado are amazingly capable of speech, as they demonstrate in "Sheep Song", sung by the sheep, a lion, and Paquette.
8. Cunegonde has been abducted by pirates while en route to the New World. Where is she eventually found?

Answer: Constantinople

Using the gold from El Dorado, Candide buys Cunegonde's freedom. He also buys Maximillian, who isn't dead after all.
9. The group of friends now has no money. Whom do they visit for advice?

Answer: The Wisest Man in the World

The Wisest Man in the World's assistant is none other than the very-much alive Doctor Pangloss. From him, they learn the recipe to living a happy life.
10. Where does the group of friends end up at the end of the show?

Answer: A farm

The friends decide to stay on the farm and "Make Our Garden Grow". They also learn that this is certainly not the best of all possible worlds.
