Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do we call a person such as Oedipus who kills his/her father?

Answer: Patricide

Parricide may refer either to the act of killing one's father, or to the person who does so. Pater means father in Latin.

Matricide is killing one's mother. Fratricide is killing one's brother. Sororicide is killing one's sister. All are from Latin: mater=mother; frater=brother; soror=sister.

Trypanocide means killing of trypanosomes, parasitic protozoa, usually in the bloodstream. Dominicide is the slaying of one's master. Vaticide is the killing of a prophet.
2. What precisely does autocide mean?

Answer: Killing oneself using a vehicle

Autocide is suicide specifically by using a car or its parts, whether by wrecking it, plunging off a cliff or using the exhaust to inhale. The word automobile simply means self moving.
Parasuicide refers to an attempted suicide.
Vehicular homicide is killing another person using a car, bus, or truck, etc.
Manslaughter is the unintentional killing of a person.
Murder is the intentional killing of a person.
3. Why would you use an herbicide in your garden?

Answer: To kill weeds

Herbicides are usually aimed at killing only certain plants, primarily those we consider weeds. Any plant may be a weed, as the term is used for an unwanted growth such as grass in a flower garden. Many commercial herbicides are specifically for killing crabgrass, dandelions or other common invasive species.
Some herbicides, such as Roundup, are indiscriminate killers and must be used very carefully so as not to harm beneficial plants.
4. If you're sitting around doing nothing productive, you may not be wasting time, but you may be killing it. What -cide is this?

Answer: Chronocide

Killing time is usually done when you're waiting for some important event to occur, sometimes the best way to prepare for it. Frantic activity works better for some people.
Menticide is the destruction, alteration, or postponement of some or all of your mental ability in a psychological way, such as brainwashing, or clandestine memory that is triggered by something. The method used in the film "The Manchurian Candidate" is a good example of this.
Cimicide is the killing of bedbugs.
Mariticide is the killing of one's husband.
5. In his prophetic and paranoiac tale "The Black Cat", Poe's narrator does a terrible thing. What is the killing of a cat?

Answer: Felicide

The storyteller kills the cat he loves, as he appears to be descending into madness and does not understand his own actions. His love and care of pets turns to fear and hatred. He is, of course, haunted by his foul deed.
Pulicide is the killing of fleas, which is evidently in the best interests of humans and their pets.
Uxoricide is the killing of one's wife.
Kiticide is not real...unless it refers to the kite-eating tree in "Peanuts".
6. Lumberjacks are definitely tree killers. What's the scientific name?

Answer: Silvicide

Sylvan refers to trees and forests, as in Pennsylvania (Penn's woods) or a sylvan deity such as a mythical satyr or faun that inhabits the woods.
Biocide is a much broader term meaning the killing of living things. For example, an antibiotic translates as a killer of living organisms, as it cannot differentiate between beneficial or harmful bacteria. So, if you've been taking an antibiotic for the prescribed number of days (and you should always do this unless your doctor advises otherwise or you have an allergic reaction) you can get your own personal good guys, the flora in your digestive tract, up and running again by taking a probiotic.
Avicide is the killing of birds.
Formicide is the killing of ants.
7. "Et tu, Brute?" were the last words attributed to Gaius Julius Caesar, when he realised that his friend Brutus had committed what?

Answer: Amicicide

Brutus was a man he considered his friend, and Gaius was hurt by this betrayal more than by the many others who plotted to assassinate him. But then this was politics, strange bedfellows and all. A quick look at ancient Roman history will show that most Roman leaders were dispatched by either their own family members, friends, or the Praetorian Guard (the soldiers who guarded the emperor or dictator). This is why many of them had food tasters.
Perdricide is the killing of a partridge.
Vespacide is killing a wasp or wasps.
Ovicide can mean either the killing of a sheep (ovine) or the killing of an egg (ovum/ova).
8. Captain Ahab was on a mission when he set out to slay Moby Dick. What did he want to commit?

Answer: Ceticide

Ahab's nemesis was the great white whale that had taken off his leg, and Ahab had sworn to kill him. Gregory Peck played Ahab in the old film, and is seen going down with his kill toward the end.
A spermicide is an agent that kills sperm to prevent fertilisation of the female.
Taeniacide is the killing of tapeworms. In days of old, tapeworm eggs were supposedly sold to women who wanted to lose weight and be painfully thin.
Medicide is assisted suicide with the aid of a doctor or other healthcare professional, such as Dr. Kevorkian (aka Dr. Death).
9. Buzzzzzzzzzzzz, here comes the first fly of spring! Hand me that flyswatter so I can commit what?

Answer: Muscicide

Every time you commit this atrocity you help save the world from contamination, disease and general filth. If flies were not killed off by birds, humans and others, we would be knee deep in them. Flies do not eat solid food, but regurgitate what they ingest and then consume it. They also flit around on many germ-ridden surfaces and are responsible for almost as many deaths as mosquitoes.
Ursicide is the killing of bears.
Acaricide is killing mites (a miticide is a killing agent)or ticks.
Vulpicide is the killing of a fox, whereas lupicide is killing a wolf.
10. By the 21st century we humans have become very aware of our responsibility to prevent killing off our environment. What is the term for this?

Answer: Ecocide

Our ecology is our life. It has been proved that we can exist on our planet without excess pollution, and unless we make efforts now some features may not be recoverable. Ever. It is estimated that of all the species that have inhabited Earth, approximately 98% are now extinct. The primary method of extinction for the dinosaurs and other life forms is thought to be a meteorite that slammed into the area that is now northern Mexico about 65 million years ago. Most other extinct species were either hunted to death or were unable to adapt to changing climate and/or geographical mutations. Some simply lost their habitats.
Genocide is the killing of an ethnic group.
Liberticide is the destruction of freedom.
Geronticide is the custom of allowing the aged to die when they are no longer able to care for or provide for themselves. This is not killing per se, but is a custom practiced by many Inuit tribes, as the elderly will go outside and "sleep in the snow".
