The Thénardiers try to convince Marius that Valjean is a murderer and corpse-robber by showing Marius a ring that was left behind from a corpse that Valjean was dragging down the sewers. Marius realizes that the ring belongs to him, and that he was the "corpse" that Thénardier saw Jean Valjean dragging. Jean Valjean was his savior that night.

He then hurries Cosette away to her father's hideaway just in time to give him a fond farewell before his death!
