Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song in the musical "Les Miserables" is basically one big fat lie?

Answer: The Waltz of Treachery

"The Waltz of Treachery" is the Thénardiers' nefarious attempt to profess love for Cosette and establish themselves as her kind, Christian caretakers. Their goal, of course, is to drive up the price Valjean is willing to pay to take their "darling Colette", uh, Cosette away. Though he sees through their poor attempt, Valjean agrees to pay 1500 francs for Cosette.
2. Javert appears as good or evil - in his role as a spy, Javert lies to the students at the barricade about the plans of the French army. Which of the following is one of those lies?

Answer: The army will attack from the right

In his position, it is true that Javert knows of the French army's plans, which indeed include a proper fight. Javert tells the students that "there will be no attack tonight" so "the army will attack tonight" answer is not one of his lies. Javert, however, does lie when he tells the students that the army will "hit us from the right."
3. One of Valjean's many lies is this line to Eponine: "You have my word my daughter will know" what?

Answer: the contents of the letter Eponine delivers

Eponine tries to delivers a letter Marius has written to Cosette. She meets Valjean, who gives Eponine his "word that my daughter [Cosette] will know what this letter contains," but he never does. Instead, Valjean goes to the barricade with the hope of saving Marius.

The moving "Bring Him Home" is Valjean's prayer to God that he (Valjean) will sacrifice his life if God will allow Marius to live.
4. Valjean, now appears as a man of deception: how does Valjean deceive the students at the barricade?

Answer: pretends to kill Javert

To thank Valjean for his efforts during "The First Attack", Enjolras agrees to Valjean's request to "take care of" Javert. Valjean allows Javert to escape "without bargains or petitions", but fires a shot, leading the students to believe (falsely) that he has killed Javert. While Valjean never admits to the students that he knows Javert, he does not deny it.
5. Heavens, even the honest Bishop lies! How did the Bishop lie to the police about Valjean?

Answer: confirmed Valjean's story about the silver

Despite the Bishop's kindness, Valjean steals his silver and takes flight. The Constables catch him with the silver. Valjean apparently has told them that the Bishop gave him the silver as a present. When they return to the Bishop's house, the Bishop takes pity on Valjean.

The Bishop lies to the Constables by confirming ("that is right") Valjean's story. To buy Valjean's "soul for God," the Bishop lets Valjean keep the silver he stole and even gives him more silver (candlesticks), all of which Valjean is to use to "become an honest man."
6. Which of the following statements by Thénardier is a lie and not merely a difference of opinion?

Answer: Here's a child that ain't eaten today

During "The Robbery", to garner the sympathy of Valjean (the intended victim), Madame Thénardier holds a doll wrapped in a blanket and pretends it is a hungry child. Thénardier begs Valjean for money by referencing the "child that ain't eaten today." The plan changes when Thénardier recognizes Valjean and confronts him as "the bastard who borrowed Cosette." The ruckus gets the attention of Javert, who arrives to learn "the substance of this brawl." In the confusion, Valjean and Cosette escape, and Javert again misses his chance to catch Valjean.
7. Valjean, the confessor: did Valjean ever tell Cosette in person the truth about his past?

Answer: no

In "The Confession", Valjean writes a letter to Cosette confessing his past and the truth about her mother Fantine. He confesses the truth to Marius, but Cosette does not learn the truth until she reads Valjean's letter after his death.
8. OK, so maybe just this one time he was just confused and not really lying. Who suggested to Marius that Valjean was a murderer?

Answer: Thénardier

The night that the barricade fell, Thénardier saw Valjean carrying the injured Marius in the sewers and assumed it was a corpse. At the wedding of Marius and Cosette, the Thénardiers seek to blackmail Marius with information that Valjean is a murderer. For proof, Thénardier shows Marius a ring he stole off the "corpse." Recognizing the ring as his own, Marius realizes that it was Valjean that carried him from the barricade and thus saved his life.
9. Valjean leads people to think that he is Cosette's father. Is he in fact her father?

Answer: No

Her father was Félix Tholomyès, a rich student who "spent a summer" by Fantine's side and then "abandoned" Fantine and Cosette "leaving them flat." Fantine's sadness at his treatment of her and her child is one basis for the remorse she expresses in "I Dreamed a Dream."
10. Is Valjean lying again? In "The Confrontation", after Fantine dies in the hospital, Javert arrives to arrest Valjean. Valjean "pledges his word" that he will return to Javert if he's given three days to save Fantine's child. Does Valjean keep "his word" to Javert?

Answer: No

Valjean does keep his word to the dying Fantine by saving Cosette from the Thénardiers. He does not, however, return to Javert in three days. Instead he goes on the run again. Javert does not meet Valjean again until fate brings them together at the barricade where Javert has been captured as a spy.
