Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This fellow was condemned to suffer an everlasting hunger, in spite of having water and food close to him. Who was he?

Answer: Tantalus

Tantalus became immortal by conversing and dining with the gods. He betrayed them by sharing their secrets and food with his friends. To add insult to injury, he murdered his son Pelops and served his flesh to the gods to test their omniscience. As punishment, he was put in water that was up to his chin but he couldn't drink it; also, there was a fruit tree above his head but he couldn't reach it.
2. This guy stole fire from the gods. As a punishment, he was chained to a rock, with his liver being eaten by an eagle every day. What was his name?

Answer: Prometheus

Prometheus was the son of Iapetus - one of the Titans. He stole the sacred fire from the gods. In punishment, on Zeus' command, Prometheus was chained to a rock in the Caucasus, where an eagle would eat his liver, and each day the liver would be renewed. The punishment was supposed to last forever, but Heracles killed the bird one day.
3. This man is condemned for eternity to roll a block of stone up a steep hill in the underworld. However, when it is about to reach the top, it tumbles back down. What is the name of this poor chap?

Answer: Sisyphus

Sisyphus was the founder of Corinth. He betrayed the secrets of the gods and chained the god of death, Thanatos, to make his power over the deceased void. His labour is supposed to last for eternity.
4. She was a mortal and had fourteen lovely children. She claimed her superiority over Leto, a goddess, who had only two children: Apollo and Artemis. Leto in vengeance told Apollo and Artemis to kill all of her children. Do you know who this unhappy woman is?

Answer: Niobe

Niobe was so devastated over the death of her children that she turned into a weeping stone, thus becoming the symbol of eternal mourning.
5. He dared to challenge the god Apollo to a music contest. Apollo won the contest and punished him for his boldness by skinning him alive. Do you know whom I am talking about?

Answer: Marsyas

Marsyas was a satyr who found a flute thrown away by Athena (she wanted to get rid of the instrument she herself had created, because her cheeks looked puffy when she played it). Marsyas thought he played the flute even better than Apollo, the god of music himself. That's why he challenged the god to a contest (and lost).
