Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It turned out to be a terrible mistake to hire this young, unmarried woman. You have no choice. You have to sack this employee. You must dis________ "dis" ________. A four-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the four-letter word?

Answer: miss

The word "miss" is short for mistress, which originated from the Latin word for master. As is typical for many words describing women, negative connotations of a sexual nature have become attached to the word "mistress". Researcher Julia Penelope found over 200 words used to denote dissolute women but only 20 similar words for men. Many of the words used for women once had neutral or positive connotations.

Dismiss is derived from a Latin word meaning to send apart.
2. Ginger Baker knew when Cream was recording for a Smothers Brothers' television show in May of 1968 that rock's first super-group was finished. He realized that a break up was in the offing for this ensemble. Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce would dis____ "dis" ____. A four-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the four-letter word?

Answer: band

In May of 1968, Cream recorded two songs for the Smothers Brother's television show. Eric Clapton could be seen to be scowling as he lip-synched one of the two songs, a song that he had written but by then detested. Ginger Baker would later say of the recording session for the show, "That was probably when we knew it was all over."
3. The assembly line has been shut down. A robotic arm hangs limp and useless. Repairing the arm will probably require taking apart this limb. The repairman will most likely dis______ "dis" ______. A six-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the six-letter word?

Answer: member

"Member" derived from the Latin "membrum". Dismember initially referred only to limb removal, but usage was broadened to include the more general notion of taking things apart. If we removed the robotic arm to repair it, we could claim that we dismembered the dismembered member!
4. The lawyer knows that the jury will never find in favor of his client based on the merits of the case. But the lawyer is quite willing to twist the facts to win this lawsuit. Since it is necessary, the attorney is prepared to dis____ "dis" ____. A four-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the four-letter word?

Answer: tort

Does it surprise you to learn that "tort" derived from the Latin verb 'torquere" meaning to twist? Conceptually, the derivation rests on the notion of being wrong in the sense of "twisted". Interestingly, attorney also has a "twisted" etymology. The Old French "atorner" from which "attorney" derives meant literally to assign, as in to take one's "turn".
5. It's the final hand of the poker tournament, and only a decisive win will propel Bret into the lead over his brother Bart. He has the ace, king, queen and jack of spades. But this last is the deuce of clubs. If he wants to draw a royal flush then Maverick must dis____ "dis" ____. A four-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the four-letter word?

Answer: card

It is thought that the Chinese paper dominoes of the 10th century were the first playing cards. By the 14th century the Moslem world had devised four suits, which the French later named spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds. And it was, of course, the Americans who, in the 19th century, introduced the joker.
6. After weeks of rehearsal the cast has this drama ready to show an audience. It is time to raise the curtain and dis____ "dis" ____. A four-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the four-letter word?

Answer: play

Surprisingly, the etymology of the word "play" and the word "display" seem unrelated. The word "play" is related to the European root meaning to engage oneself. Other words from the same root include pledge and indulge. "Display" arose from the same Indo-European root that gives us the word "ply" coupled with the prefix "dis".

The word "display" comes from a Latin word meaning to unfold. Could "play", in the sense of theater, have derived secondarily from "display"? I am unable to document that this is the case, but certainly a play could be considered to be an unfolding.
7. Your grandchildren are giggling in the bedroom. As soon as you turn on the light you can see that they have hidden the comforter for their bed. They are so cute and think that they are so smart! Yet, you know that you can quickly find where they have hidden this comforter. Yes, you will soon dis_____ "dis" _____. A five-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the five-letter word?

Answer: cover

The "cover" in "discover" derives from an Indo-European root that subsumes many different aspects of the concept of covering. Other words that come from the same root include "warn", "warranty" and "kerchief".
8. The demonstrators formed a line around the visitors' center at the Glen Canyon dam. An older man able to remember the beauty of Glen Canyon held up a homemade sign demanding that the government empty the dam and restore this ravine. The sign read dis_____ "dis" _____. A five-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the five-letter word?

Answer: gorge

Lake Powell, which stretches out behind the Glen Canyon dam, has covered what many consider to be one of the most beautiful canyons in the southwestern United States. Strident protests failed to halt the filling of the dam. Environmental damage to the Grand Canyon, which is downstream from the dam, is causing increasing public outcry. Environmentalists are attempting to get congress to at least fund a study exploring the effects of decommissioning the dam.
9. Your pockets stuffed with garlic, a beaker of Holy Water clutched in your right hand, you search Dracula's Transylvanian castle for artifacts. It's the middle of the day, and you are properly protected. Surely you have little to fear from this dread nobleman. Surely you can safely dis_____ "dis" _____. A five-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the five-letter word?

Answer: count

The historical Dracula was one Vlad Tepes. In the 14th century the Holy Roman Emperor created the Order of the Dragon. The governor of Transylvania joined the order. His opponents, aware of the fact that "dragon" was one of the names scripture gave to the devil, gave the governor the appellation of "Dracul", meaning "devil".

His son Vlad Tepes, therefore, was the little devil (or son of the devil) - Dracula! He was also known as Vlad the Impaler. ("www.romaniatourism.com/dracula.html")
10. The unruly and stringy shock of hair will not behave. It insists on standing straight up. You've had it. You are going to take the curling iron and teach this unmanageable lock a lesson. You are going to dis_____ "dis" _____. (Note that the first word is being used in a figurative sense.) A five-letter word that added to the first "dis" without a space and added to the second "dis" with a space will complete the phrase. What is the five-letter word?

Answer: tress

I could have dismantled "dis" mantle, dissected "dis" sect or even disfigured "dis" figure. Yet, for my tenth and final question, I opted to make a "stretch" and distress "dis" tress. Actually, "distress" is not a "dis" word at all but a "di" word - coming from the Latin "di-stringere" meaning to draw out or pull apart.

In fact, one could stretch the point even further and make a connection with the idiom "strung out". "Di-stress" is related to the somewhat archaic English word "distrain", which has essentially the same meaning.

The etymology of "tress" bears no relation to that of distress but rather depends on a Greek word meaning hair.
