Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In classical mythology, a dog, usually with three heads and often called the hell hound, guarded the entrance to the underworld. What was its name?

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus ate only live meat. That allowed him to admit dead spirits to enter (but not leave) the underworld, and to prevent live beings from entering. As his twelfth labor, Hercules was assigned to capture Cerberus. He did so, and brought the dog to the surface. However, Cerberus soon escaped and returned to his guard duty.
2. According to Norse folklore, the Kraken is a gigantic sea monster that stalks the coasts of Norway and Greenland.

Answer: True

The Kraken has been described as a huge whale or giant crab, but most often as a mammoth squid 40-50 feet in length. It appears in such works as "The Kraken," a poem by Tennyson, Melville's "Moby Dick" (Chapter 59), and the 1981 (remake 2010) film "Clash Of The Titans."
3. In Middle Eastern mythology, what was the name of the gigantic bird of prey who could snatch up elephants?

Answer: Roc

The Roc (whose name comes from the Persian "rokh") appears in two Sanskrit epics: "The Mahabharata" (I.1353); and "The Ramayana" (III.39). It also appears in "The Thousand and One Night Tales." It provided transport for Sinbad the Sailor.
4. This fantastic beast from classical mythology had a very long life span after which it traditionally consumed itself in flames, only to be regenerated from its own ashes. What is it?

Answer: Phoenix

The Phoenix was a huge bird, associated with the sun. Early Christianity claimed the Phoenix as a symbol for such things as Christ and the Resurrection. The creature was the inspiration for the name of Phoenix, Arizona, and it plays a major role in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix," the fifth book in the series.
5. In Norse mythology, Odin rides an eight-legged grey horse. What is its name?

Answer: Sleipner

Sleipner appears both in the traditional "Poetic Edda" (c. 13th century) and in the 13th century "Prose Edda" written by Snorri Sturluson. In both, he is described as the best of all horses. Sleipner also appears in the "Volsung Saga" and the "Gesta Danorum."
6. In 1982, when the National Hockey League Colorado Rockies relocated to New Jersey, a fan poll resulted in the new team being named after a legendary being said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.

Answer: True

The Pine Barrens are said to be the home of the Jersey Devil, most often described as a kangaroo with a goat's head, bat-like wings, clawed hands, cloven hooves, and a forked tail. The sightings reached a peak in 1909 with hundreds of encounters publicized. Most of those claims have been shown to be deliberate hoaxes. And no one has claimed the rumored 1909 reward of $10,000 by the Philadelphia Zoo for the beast's dung.
7. Australia has a fantastic beast that derives from Aboriginal legends. It lurks in water and enjoys feasting on humans. What is its name?

Answer: Bunyip

The Bunyip inhabits creeks, streams, rivers, swamps, billabongs, and waterholes. It has been described in several different ways: a giant water dog; a huge starfish; a flesh-eating seal; and a monster with dark fur and the head of a crocodile, with flippers and tusks or horns.
8. Kludde is a malicious spirit (although sometimes only a prankster) that roams the countryside in which European nation?

Answer: Belgium

Kludde appears most often in the shape of a huge black dog, sometimes with wings, that walks on its hind legs. It has the ability to appear in almost any form (cat, horse, frog, tree, shrub, etc.) depending on what it wants to do. It could, for example, become a horse that takes a rider on a terrifying trip only to dump him in a pool of water.

It can run at speeds that make escape possible and delights in killing human victims.
9. In Norse mythology, Odin is prophesied to be swallowed and killed by a gigantic wolf. What is the name of the wolf?

Answer: Fenrir (Fenrisuler)

Both the "Poetic Edda" and the "Prose Edda" include the Fenrir legend. Because of the prophesy that Fenrir will kill Odin, the Aesir attempt to neutralize the wolf using a fetter (Gleipnir) made by dwarfs. While being tied down, Fenrir manages to bite off the right hand of the god Tyr. During a storm, Fenrir gets free and later kills Odin.

He is then killed by Odin's son, Vidar. [Jormungandr is Fenrir's brother.]
10. This fantastic creature from classical mythology has the front quarters of an eagle and the hind quarters of a horse. One, named Buckbeak, appears in "Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban." What kind of creature is this?

Answer: Hippogriff

First described in Virgil's "Ecologues," the Hippogriff is depicted in Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" as a beast who can fly round the world and to the moon. In 1904, pranksters at Lake George in New York created a fake Hippogriff to scare tourists. "Dungeons and Dragons" includes a version of the beast.

A Florida amusement park, The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, has a roller coaster named "Flight Of The Hippogriff."
