Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the best known creatures in classical mythology is this white stallion with wings that ultimately became a constellation. What is its name?

Answer: Pegasus

Sired by Poseidon and foaled by Medusa, Pegasus brought thunderbolts to Zeus. Captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon with the help of Athena, he permitted Bellerophon to ride him to defeat the Chimera. Ultimately, Zeus transformed him into the constellation Pegasus.
2. This ancient Egyptian creature, not a deity, was a female demon that was part lion, part hippopotamus, and part crocodile (the three largest beasts that ate humans). What was it called?

Answer: Ammit

The Ammit resided near Duat, near the scales of justice in the Egyptian underworld at the Hall of Two Truths, where Anubis weighed the heart of a person seeking entrance against the feather of Ma'at, goddess of truth. If the heart was not pure, Ammit devoured it.
3. This fantastic beast, in one form or another, appears in about every culture in the world. It is undead, usually fears sunlight, and is not reflected in a mirror. It is traditionally killed by driving a wooden stake through its heart. What creature is this?

Answer: Vampire

Vampires have been around almost as long as humans. Demons who can change shape and drink blood are found in tales from Assyria, Babylonia, Greece, and Rome, for example. Many of the details about vampires come from Eastern European stories in the 16th/17th centuries including them being undead and killed by a wooden stake through the heart.

The "modern" vampire dates from Bram Stoker's 1897 Novel, "Dracula." Since then, vampires, including Dracula, have appeared in many novels, films and television shows.
4. This fantastic beast is part of Phoenician, Etruscan, and Classical lore. It has the upper body of a winged horse and the lower body of a fish. What is it?

Answer: Hippocampus

Hippocampi were the horses of Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea. They appear in ancient legends, mosaics, and art works.
5. Michael Landon made his screen debut in 1957 playing which creature that, under a full moon, transforms from a human into a fur-covered beast with long teeth and claws?

Answer: Werewolf

Landon starred in "I Was A Teenage Werewolf". A werewolf is a being who can change from a normal human into a "wolfman", usually during a full moon, prey on humans, and then return to human form. The concept of the werewolf derives from ancient human interactions with wolves that preyed on livestock and, sometimes, attacked people. That image merged with experiences regarding actual humans who believed or imagined that they were wolves (the psychological phenomenon called lycanthropy).
6. Ainu folktales in Japan tell of a huge octopus-type monster that inhabits Funka Bay and beyond, and preys on boats that pass by. What is its name?

Answer: Akkorokamui

The Akkorokamui has been described as 120 meters or more in length, bright red, and glowing like a sunset on the ocean. It is visible from great distances. It is supposed to have the ability to self-amputate and then re-grow arms. Many shrines in Japan still pay homage to this beast.
7. In Chippewa legend, and the legends of other Anishinabe tribes, the spirit of a young girl, who passed away from a strange disease, descends from the mountains to contaminate people, especially children. What is it called?

Answer: Acheri

The Acheri, who usually has gray skin and dark eyes, is also believed to sing and play musical instruments. Any child or elderly person hearing those sounds will become ill and die. The Chippewa believe the only defense against the Acheri is to wrap a Medicine Woman's red cloth around the neck.
8. In Tanzania there is said to be a fantastic beast, usually described as a gigantic striped feline, that feasts on humans. What are its two names?

Answer: Mngwa and Nunda

Mngwa (or Nunda) is a huge, ferocious dark grey or black feline, usually described as at least as large as a donkey, that stalks humans at night. The legend of Mngwa (or "Strange One") dates back to a Swahili song from 1150 that mentions Simba (lion), Nsui (leopard), and Mngwa as three different beasts. The Mngwa is supposed to be stronger than Simba and more deadly than Nsui.
9. This fantastic creature, initially a dead body animated by magic, originated in Haitian folklore. What is it usually called?

Answer: Zombie

A zombie is an undead being created by the reanimation of a human corpse. In Haiti, and other places, they are often said to be created by the use of voodoo. Sometimes referred to as ghouls, zombies have appeared such art forms as novels and films.
10. According to legend, an enormous shark-like sea monster inhabits the ocean off the coast of Western Japan. What is it called?

Answer: Isonade

Isonade has been described as a creature that has never been seen because it is always hidden beneath the waves, except for its gigantic hooked tail fin. It uses its hooked tail to drag sailors off their ships and into the sea where it devours them. It also utilizes its tail to capsize ships and kill people on the beach.
