Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the top of the show when Frankie asks Sparky to go over the lyrics, what does Sparky sing?

Answer: Love is a Long and Slender Thing

Frankie then hits Sparky as Jinx chimes in with his line, "He's gonna be hacking around like that all night."
2. In "Three Coins," whose name do the Plaids not know?

Answer: The pianist

Frankie asks Sparky, Sparky asks Smudge, Smudge asks Jinx, and Jinx runs to the pianist to ask his/her name. The ripple travels back to Frankie who tells the audience the pianist's name.
3. In which song does Sparky start the choreography too soon?

Answer: Gotta Be This or That

Sparky starts the moves earlier than the rest of the Plaids. However, in "No Not Much," Jinx starts his singing too early.
4. Smudge dedicates "No Not Much" to those in the audience who are Sophomores and Juniors.

Answer: False

Smudge dedicates to all those in the audience who are Juniors or Seniors. To those who don't have dates, he also invites the audience to imagine the Plaids are their dates.
5. What item does Smudge want to use in the song "Crazy 'Bout Ya Baby"?

Answer: Plumbers helpers

Although they are merely long-handled plungers, Frankie calls them plumbers helpers. Throughout the song, the Plaids pretend to use them as microphones.
6. What is the correct order of lines that Sparky says in the song "The Osterizer School of Harmonic Theory"?

Answer: Blend, Puree, Mix, Chop

Unfortunately, I could not remember the order of these lines when I played Sparky so I made up an acronym. Bread Pans May Chip. It may be corny, but it helped me remember my lines.
7. What does Jinx get after the end of "No Not Much"?

Answer: A nosebleed

Sparky runs over to Jinx to get cotton, Frankie has an asthma attack, and Smudge gets his Milk of Magnesia.
8. What does Sparky do after giving Jinx the cotton?

Answer: Writes the words to "Perfidia "on his hand

Frankie forgets what's coming up next, Sparky has to remind him, and Smudge is afraid to entertain the audience while Frankie checks up on Jinx. Sparky continues to write the words on his hands until Frankie draws attention to him.
9. For which of the following groups did Smudge say he made sock puppets and pretend that they were the singers?

Answer: The Four Aces

He also mentioned the Ames Brothers when he was reminiscing about the old record albums.
10. What word does Sparky laugh at while setting up for "Perfidia"?

Answer: Bowels

Smudge makes a reference to Enrico Caruso right before the song.
11. Are the Spanish words in the MTI (Music Theatre International) libretto the same as in the MTI music score?

Answer: No

As I was memorizing the lyrics in the libretto, the music director told me that I was singing the wrong words. That is when we realized each score was different.
12. In "Cry," what lyrics does Jinx sing when he begins to rock out?

Answer: If your heartache

The audience always laughs at this part because it is so unexpected that the shy, nose-bleeding Jinx breaks through his inhibitions.
13. Where does Frankie say he worked while he was alive?

Answer: Dental supplies

One of my favorite lines is when Sparky tells where he worked (in Better Dresses), and Jinx just looks at him blankly.
14. Whose shift did Sparky cover for when Perry Como came to visit?

Answer: Jinx's

Jinx had to get his nose cauterized, and Sparky ended up ripping out the carburetor of Perry Como's limo.
15. The song "Catch a Falling Star" segues into which song?

Answer: Caribbean Plaid

After the spotlight drops on the golden cardigan, everyone comes onstage with sombreros and does the most audience-involved song in the show.
16. What does the pianist do right after "Caribbean Plaid"?

Answer: Gets up and leaves the stage

The pianist goes on her union break, but Frankie realizes that the show must go on. They end up finding somebody to play the piano for them.
17. Who plays the piano for "Heart and Soul"?

Answer: Sparky

Sparky resists initially to playing, but then rocks out with a selection from a Grieg piano concerto. He then begins to play the famous song.
18. Which television company showed the "Ed Sullivan Show"?

Answer: Columbia Broadcasting System

Sparky says, "And now, Columbia Broadcasting System invites you to stay tuned for..." To which Frankie finishes, "The Ed Sullivan Show."
19. Does Smudge have his Scottish tartan on the wrong shoulder at the beginning of "Scotland the Brave"?

Answer: Yes

Smudge is dyslexic, and frequently has the microphone in the wrong hand or is facing the wrong direction in choreography.
20. What is the last place said that the Plaids could perform at with their Plaid suits?

Answer: Mt. Everest

Sparky is the first and last person to mention a place in which the Plaids could perform at with their new jackets.
