2. Which ancient civilisation existed on Crete before the Greek civilisation? (Hint: The labyrinth and, by extension, the minotaur of Greek mythology can possibly be connected to these peoples.)

Answer: Minoan civilisation

The Minoan civilisation is thought to have flourished between 2600 and 1100 BC. A British archaeologist, Arthur Evans, rediscovered the culture in 1900. He discovered the Minoan palace at Knossos (said to be the site of the labyrinth that contained the Minotaur of legend), which proved to be the largest site yet found.

Some scholars suggest the huge volcanic eruption of Thera, somewhere between 1642 and 1540 BC. caused the rapid decline of the civilistion.

3. Which surrealist painter is best remembered for his piece "The Persistence of Memory", featuring three iconic melting pocket watches?

Answer: Salvador Dalí

A popular theory, that the melting watches were inspired by Albert Einstein's recently published Special Theory of Relativity, makes sense on an intuitive level - Einstein's theory did, after all, introduce a radically new concept of time. But when asked, Dalí claimed that Einstein's theory had nothing to do with the painting - actually, he had thought of the painting's concept while watching a Camembert (a classic French cheese) melt in the sun!

5. What was Merriam Webster's word of the year for 2016? Dali would approve.

Answer: surreal

Surreal is defined as "marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream". While surreal came into use in the 1920s, Webster didn't add it to their dictionary until 1967. They used two criteria to determine the word of the year: 1. how many times the word is looked up, and 2. significant increase in lookups over the years.

7. Musical theater has always found France to be a romantic and appropriately dramatic locale. Which long-running Broadway musical of these is NOT set there?

Answer: My Fair Lady

"My Fair Lady" takes place in England, where the flower-seller Eliza Doolittle is found to speak very poor English. Dr. Henry Higgins takes it upon himself to fix Eliza and make others believe she is a lady. This is the only non-French-set musical in the bunch, and it is based on "Pygmalion", a George Bernard Shaw comedy.

10. In the Broadway musical "Carmen Jones" the title character, who makes a play for a "fly boy", works in a factory making what item?

Answer: Parachutes

"Carmen Jones" is a tragic love story that launched on Broadway in 1943 with a cast that was relatively new to the stage. Based on the opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, the storyline was modernised to adopt a World War II setting, including changing her place of work from a cigarette factory to a parachute factory. Oscar Hammerstein II provided the wonderful lyrics for the show.
