"Geordie" is the accent and everyday language of much of North East England. I was brought up there, and heard many of these words and phrases daily. The colloquial spellings used are phonetic.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the word "Geordie" actually mean?

Answer: anyone from the Tyneside area of England

People from Newcastle upon Tyne could be Geordies but so are people, both male and female, from other Tyneside towns. George Stephenson is known as "the Father of the Railways", and produced both the "Locomotion" and the "Rocket", two of the earliest steam trains.
2. What is a "neb"?

Answer: nose

"Keep your neb out of this", means 'keep your nose out" - in other words mind your own business!
3. What does "giz" mean?

Answer: give me

"Giz a quid", means "give me a pound". If you give something, you don't "giz" it.
4. Where might you hear people shouting "Howway the lads"?

Answer: football match

This is a common supporters' shout at Newcastle's matches - at least it was when I lived there! It means "come on men"!
5. What is a netty?

Answer: toilet

It's a rather crude term, but means toilet (lavatory).
6. If you are "gannin", what are you doing?

Answer: going somewhere

"Gannin" means going. The well known 19th Century song "The Blaydon races" - known as the "Geordie national anthem" - has its chorus starting "Whoh me lads, you shoulda seen us gannin".
7. Calling someone "hinny" is a term of endearment.

Answer: True

It means "dear" or "friend", and can be said to either a man or woman.
8. If you "dunsh" something, its owner would be annoyed.

Answer: True

"Dunsh" means crash or bump into, usually applied to a car crash. The owner would definitely be annoyed!
9. If a Geordie said "wor lass", to whom are they referring?

Answer: wife

It might sound slightly derogatory or maybe even chauvinist, but "wor lass" is really a very affectionate term.
10. "Mind the bairn" means to baby sit or look after a child temporarily.

Answer: True

It could also mean "take care, there's a child near you". Like many other Geordie words "bairn" is also widely used in Scotland.
11. You are told to "gan canny". What are you being asked to do?

Answer: be careful

"Gan" means go, and "canny" can mean careful, though it also has other meanings such as "canny lad" meaning good boy.
12. If someone is "dead jammy" what are they?

Answer: lucky

"Jammy" means lucky or fortunate. Calling someone a "jammy git" could be either an insult or a compliment depending on circumstances!
13. Football, i.e. soccer is the most popular sport in the North East, but what is the official nickname for Newcastle United football team?

Answer: Magpies

The magpie is a striking black and white member of the crow family, which is ruthless and intelligent. Hence an excellent name for this soccer team, which plays in striped black and white shirts.
14. If you told someone that you were "gannin yearm", what would you be intending to do?

Answer: go home

"Yearm" is sometimes pronounced "hyearm".
15. What does "toon" mean?

Answer: town centre

If you were going shopping in the town centre, you'd be "gannin doon toon", i.e. "going down town".
16. What is a "stotty cake"?

Answer: a loaf of bread

It's a disc shaped loaf, still commonly sold in the Northeast. I have no idea how "stotty' originated, though to "stot" a ball can mean to bounce it!
17. A "boozah" is a public house.

Answer: True

To booze is to drink heavily, and is used throughout the U.K. A boozer is a drinker, but a "boozah" is the pub.
18. If you ask a Geordie how he feels, what would he probably say if he is well?

Answer: champion

He could possibly say any of these, but we are looking for the common Geordie word, which is "champion".
19. What is the Geordie word for yes?

Answer: aye

"Aye" means yes, but to emphasise your concurrence say "wiy aye" or "wiy aye man" - (why yes & why yes man)!
20. And finally, if a Geordie referred admiringly to "Wor Jackie", who or what would he be likely to mean?

Answer: the footballer Jackie Milburn

Jackie Milburn was an outstanding player of the 1940's and 50's, now deceased but still held in high esteem in Newcastle. He played for England 13 times, and was renowned for his speed. Jackie Charlton is also a Geordie, and actually managed Newcastle football club for about a year, but there is really only one "Wor Jackie" and that is Milburn!
