Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known among the people of the US and Canada as Bigfoot or Sasquatch, the name given to this creature by the Lakota Indians in Wisconsin is Chiye-tanka. What does this mean in their language?

Answer: big elder brother

Often depicted as having dark reddish or dark brown hair, Bigfoot is also notable for its large eyes, well-developed supraorbital ridges and massive forehead. Footprints, left by this breather, are 60 cm long and 20 cm wide.
2. We move to the mountainous regions of Southern Asia. The local analog of Bigfoot is known as Yeti. The first report of this wight, made by a non-native person, came in which century?

Answer: 19

It was British representative in Nepal, B.H. Hodgson, who made an announcement of a barbate being which attacked his servants. "It moved, they said, erectly: was covered with long dark hair, and had no tail." (Hodgson, about what his servants saw). Anyway, they fled from this "wild man" instead of opening fire on it. The year was 1832.
3. This creature is part of the folklore of Australian Aborigines. European colonizers also claim to have encountered it.

Answer: Yowie

Pursuant to Australian biologist Rex Gilroy (and his sources), the Blue Mountain region is a territory where these beings have been noticed more than 3,200 times throughout the centuries.
4. Another "beast" resembling Yeti is said to inhabit the Everglades region, including the area of the national park. It is well-known under the name of Florida ____ Ape. Fill in the correct adjective/noun.

Answer: skunk

Called this way because of its disgusting smell, the Florida skunk ape is said to be as tall as an average basketball player (seven feet). It is also famous for its red fur.
5. Name the Brazilian equivalent of Bigfoot.

Answer: Mapinguary

Apparently this black-felted hominid is common in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. In 1937 a real massacre took place in Barra do Garças with a large number of heads of cattle being murdered. Their tongues were torn out. The entire way to Ponta Branca (150 miles south from the place of the first butchery) was full of the bodies of slain animals.

These acts of violence are often (and probably with a good reason) attributed to Mapinguary.
6. An interesting encounter between humans and giant hairy primates was described by colonel P.H. Fawcett. He and his group arrived in some South American village. The locals he portrays as huge hairy savages that could not speak (they only produced grunts). Despite of their primitive look, they had bows and arrows. What happened next (according to Fawcett's diary)?

Answer: the colonel's group fired warning shots at the ape-men's feet

Just before being attacked, the colonel's men opened fire at the savages's feet and the latter fled in terror. Later Fawcett and his eldest son disappeared. What exactly happened to them remains a mystery, but several versions exist. Their disappearance (and later most likely death) has been attributed to the giant ape-men, cannibals or wild animals.

However, the explanation is probably more trivial. Danish researcher Arne Falk-Rønne, who visited Mato Grosso in the 1960s, claims to have talked to a man, who knew one of colonel Percy Fawcett's murderers. Pursuant to his story Fawcett's group experienced an accident on their way to the Kalapalo tribe, losing the gifts they had prepared for the Indians.

This they saw as an act of disrespect and therefore they decided to kill the explorers.

A man of the Kalapalo tribe confirmed the accuracy of the story.
7. We are now in China. Tales speak of an obscure creature (half-man, half-ape) that is very strong and ferocious. It is said to eat people. What is the advice, given to wanderers who'd like to go for a walk in the mountains?

Answer: to wear a pair of hollow bamboo cylinders on their arms

Yeren, as they call this creature, is said to grab people by the hand very tightly. Then it falls into some sort of delirious trance, but without losing grip. When it comes out of this state, the monster kills and eats its victims. Tourists and explorers are advised to wear empty bamboo cylinders on their arms so as to be able to slip their arms out of the cylinders and run away, while the being is still in exaltation. Yeren is claimed to have inhabited the highland regions of China for about 2000 years now.
8. Which area/s is/are thought to be the home of Almas?

Answer: the Caucasus, Pamir and Altai mountains

Almas is claimed to occupy territories of Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The name is derived from Mongolian and means "wild man". Witness narratives date back hundreds of years depicting Almas as a more human-like being able to communicate with people by gestures. There are also accounts of Almas trading food (with people) for baubles.
9. Human height, rufescent or yellow fur and short tail characterize this creature. It is said to resemble an immense baboon. Murders of people and animals are sometimes attributed to this breather.

Answer: Chimiset

In Africa there are many reports of this being, especially in Kenya. According to some, it can walk on two legs (but also on four). On tree tops it finds the same comfort as on the ground.
10. Name the Japanese variant of Sasquatch.

Answer: Higabon

These creatures are often noticed in the Japanese islands and are particularly associated with the Hibayama mountain range in Hiroshima. They are also referred to as Kappa and Mu-Jimi.
