Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the words in the following sentence is an adverb? He gobbled his lunch quickly.

Answer: quickly

An adverb describes a verb (or an adjective). "Gobbled" is the verb in this sentence and "quickly" describes how the lunch was eaten.
2. An adverb can modify another adverb.

Answer: True

An adverb can modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. When they modify other adverbs they are usually called "intensifiers". For example: "He painted the house very neatly." Neatly is an adverb which tells how he painted the house and the word "very" describes just how neatly he painted. It describes it more or "intensifies" it.
3. Consider the sentence "Mr. Malone, the gym teacher, walked into the office." What is the function of "the gym teacher"?

Answer: appositive

An appositive is a word or group of words that gives more information about the subject. It is usually set apart from the rest of the sentence by commas.
4. Which word is the subject of this sentence? Jane walked to school yesterday.

Answer: Jane

The subject is who or what the sentence is about. Ask yourself, "Who or what is doing the action?"
5. An adjective modifies a(n) _________.

Answer: noun

Adjectives modify nouns. They tell more about them. Adjectives can be any descriptive word (like color, size, texture). Example: The blue vase was placed on the bookshelf. The adjective here is "blue". It describes the vase.
6. Nouns are words that refer to people, places and ________.

Answer: things

Sometimes you will see "ideas" included in the definition of noun. It is generally accepted though, that the main three categories that a noun falls into are people, places and things.
7. Verbs are always action verbs.

Answer: False

The two main types of verbs are action and linking verbs. There are also helping verbs but action and linking are the main types. Linking verbs do not show action. Their job is to "link" the subject to the rest of the sentence. Thus the name "linking" verb.
8. The boys collected _______ marbles and went to the park.

Answer: their

Many people get confused with which form of "there" to choose. Here's the trick:
They're - is the contraction for "they are"
Their - is the possessive form
There - is a demonstrative pronoun
Thair - is a word I made up
9. What is the correct possessive pronoun to use in this sentence? "The dog ran over to ______ food bowl." Think about this: do you know the dog's gender?

Answer: its

Many people would be tempted to write "it's" because they see "possessive". While normally we would use an apostrophe in a possessive form, it is not used with possessive pronouns. The correct form is "its". Would we put an apostrophe in the possessive pronouns:hers or his? Of course not. That rule still applies to "its". Someone might be tempted to type "his" for this sentence but since the dog's gender is not known, we cannot assume that the dog is male. Those who work with dogs usually only refer to a male dog as a dog, and the female is called a bitch, but the general population calls both genders dogs.
10. How many mistakes are in the following sentence? jack runned across the finish line

Answer: 3

There are 3.
1)Jack should be capitalized.
2)The correct form of run in this is runs or ran.
3)There should be a period at the end.
