Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The term 'ganbi' refers to a technique made famous by Chinese painter Ni Zan. 'Bi' means brush, but was does the 'gan' refer to?

Answer: Dry

'Ganbi' means 'dry brush', a marvelous technique wherein paint is applied very sparingly, hence creating a very 'dry' work!
2. Western languages are not the only ones to use cursive or italic scripts, the Asian languages have them as well, even character-based scripts! What is the term for the Japanese cursive script?

Answer: Gyosho

You will see cursive scripts like Gyosho used for scroll calligraphy. In addition, the cursive scripts will also appear as poems on various landscape or other paintings.
3. Buddhist art features a number of fascinating hybrid creatures of mythological origin. The creature known as 'gembu' in Japan is a hybrid of what two commonly known creatures?

Answer: Snake and tortoise

Some people would refer to a gembu as a dragon, but this is not quite so. That would be like calling a chimera a dragon!
4. A style of Buddhist art developed in which ancient Indian province beginning in the 1st century AD, in which Western art motifs were incorporated?

Answer: Gandhara

Fascinating hybrid artforms which employ techniques of both West and East have been found in the area of Gandhara which is now part of both Pakistan and Afghanistan. This style of art is also known as 'Kushan art'.
5. This mythical bird (some say eagle) can be found depicted in Hindu art from India to Cambodia in south Asia. What is this ancient steed of Vishnu called?

Answer: Garuda

Now, Garuda is the name for the Indonesian national airlines, but it still exists as an important creature of the Hindu faith.
6. This is a musical ensemble found primarily on the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java. What is this maker of beautiful melodies called?

Answer: Gamelan

A gamelan consists of metal or wood chimes, something like a xylophone, and also involves other percussive instruments. They are ubiquitous on Bali...if you visit there you'll probably find a gamelan player at your hotel!
7. 'Guanyin' is a figure that is found portrayed again and again in Chinese art. She is the boddhisattva of compassion (and was originally male, incidentally), whose purpose is to shepherd other souls toward salvation. What is the original Sanskrit name for Guanyin?

Answer: Avalokiteshvara

Aren't you happy I didn't make that fill-in-the-blank?
8. Traditional wooden Japanese sandals are called...?

Answer: Geta

The Japanese take their sandals very seriously, and they create very stylish looking footware I must add. Along with geta, other types of sandals include setta, waraji, asaura, and zoori.
9. In Japan, this is the term for an artist's 'noms de pinceaux' (brush name), a pseudonym commonly used alongside the ubiquitous stamped seals commonly seen on Japanese (and Chinese) paintings. What is the term for this 'brush name'?

Answer: Go

Some artists, like Hokusai, had dozens of these brush names. Sometimes, as with Western authors, the names were playful and employed gimmicks...like 'Mark Twain'.
10. Here's an easy one for all of you Hindu myth fans, what is the name of the elephant-headed god, who was the son of Shiva and Parvati?

Answer: Ganesha

Ganesha has been one of the most popular Hindu gods depicted in art, and for good reason. He is considered the god of good luck! Thanks for tuning in once again, and be sure to keep an eye out for my 'H' quiz, on the way soon!
