Maia was the eldest daughter of Atlas and Pleione, she is also one of the Pleiades, the nymphs turned into stars by Zeus.

The Herald's Staff was crowned with two snakes, symbolic of the soil and the Underworld. Other attributes of Hermes were his winged hat and shoes.
