Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would a Midwest farmer describe as a mint still?

Answer: A machine that distills the oil out of mint plants

Super heated steam is pumped into dried mint plants, which releases the oil. The steam is then allowed to condense, and the oil floats to the top.
2. What would you be doing if you were dealing with wort?

Answer: Brewing beer

Wort is the mixture of grain, water and flavoring that has yeast applied to it and is then allowed to ferment. Smelling it makes me wonder how something as wonderful as beer could come from something that stinks so bad!
3. What would a person involved in the theatre be doing during a strike?

Answer: Tearing down a set

When the show's run is over, it's time for it all to come down. A strike is a case study in mixed emotions. It's hard work but it's fun and a little sad.
4. What is a college student doing when he pulls an all nighter?

Answer: Studying

Now when I was in college texting did not exist yet. We would, though, occasionally ignore our studies till the night before a test, then try and cram a bushel of info into a shot glass of brain. Oddly enough it rarely worked well.
5. What would an American soldier do with a HET?

Answer: Drive it

HET is an acronym for a heavy equipment transport. It's a flatbed semi truck used to haul tanks, armored personnel carriers and other heavy vehicles.
6. What do the Amish call the local community they belong to?

Answer: Ordnung

Ordnung comes from the German word for order, discipline or organization. It can also refer to the set of unwritten rules each community lives by.
7. A short sale would mean what, to a real estate agent?

Answer: A house that's on sale for less money than what is owed on it

Short sales were all too common a few years ago after the housing bubble burst. The mortgage lenders often feel it's better to get part of their money, than to foreclose and get nothing.
8. Loam would be used by what people?

Answer: Gardeners

Loam is a rich fertile mixture of silt, sand and plant material. It makes an extremely good potting soil. Some people use it as fertilizer.
9. What do the jaws on a semi truck do?

Answer: Connect the trailer to the truck

There is a small metal pin under the trailer called a kingpin. The kingpin slides into a groove in the tractor and the jaws wrap around the pin, holding the trailer to the tractor.
10. What would a baker proof?

Answer: Yeast

Mix yeast, water and sugar, then let it sit a few minutes and see if it gets bubbly. That proves that your yeast is alive and usable. If it's not, you don't have a thing.
