Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the three Graces?

Answer: Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia

This Thalia should not be confused with Thalia, the muse of comedy. Clotho (who spun the thread of life), Lachesis (who measured the thread) and Atropos (who cut the thread) represented the Fates. Eunomia (Discipline), Dike (Justice) and Eirene (Peace)were the sisters of the Fates, known as the Horai, goddesses of order and fairness. Erato, Melpomene and Euterpe were Muses, controlling Lyric Poetry, Tragedy and Instrumental Music respectively.
2. What were nymphs of the meadows called?

Answer: Leimoniads

Oreads are nymphs of the mountains, napaea are nymphs of valleys and nereids are nymphs of the sea.
3. What fate befell Bellerophon?

Answer: He was thrown off in mid-air by Pegasus.

After killing the Chimera, Bellerophon attempted to become an equal with the gods themselves. Angry with him, Zeus caused Pegasus to buck him off, either killing him, laming him or blinding him in the thornbushes below.
4. Who was the nymph seduced by Zeus who was later placed among the stars as Ursa Major?

Answer: Callisto

Callisto was one of Artemis' nymph companions, and therefore dedicated to celibacy. Zeus managed to seduce her disguised as Artemis. Callisto bore him a son named Arcas, but either Zeus changed them into bears to protect her from Hera or Hera turned them into bears out of vengance. Later, both Callisto and Arcas were killed by Artemis unknowingly and she placed among the stars in remembrance.
5. Who were the nymphs that guarded the golden apples of the gods?

Answer: Hesperides

The Hekatonchires were 100 armed, 50 headed giants that were allied with Zeus when he first took over control of the heavens. The Eurinyes is another name for the Furies, the Raging Ones. The Graeae were the sisters of the Gorgons, who shared one eye and one tooth between them. Perseus stole their eye so that he could learn how to kill Medusa.
6. Who was the mother of the Furies?

Answer: Gaia

Gaia gave birth to both the Furies and the Giants after seed from Uranus' severed manhood fell into her womb.
7. Who was Heracles' mortal twin brother?

Answer: Iphicles

Iphicles was the son of Alcmene's husband Amphitryon.
8. What did Zeus transform himself into to seduce Danae?

Answer: A shower of gold

9. What was the name of Orpheus' wife?

Answer: Eurydice

When she died of a snakebite, Orpheus was heartbroken and marched down to the underworld to bring her back. He was a remarkable musician, and when he played his grief, stones would weep. He enchanted Charon, the ferryman of the dead, and Cerebus, the fearsome guardian of the gateway to let him pass.

His music melted the cold hearts of Hades and Persephone, and he was allowed to bring Eurydice back, so long as he did not turn back to look at her before reaching the living world. He failed and lost her to the underworld forever.
10. What does 'Oedipus' mean?

Answer: swollen foot

Oedipus was the king who killed his father and married his mother unknowningly. After learning what he had done, his mother (wife) killed herself and he took his own sight.
