Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After castrating his father, Cronus threw the genitals into the sea. From the foam that they created, Aphrodite was born. Where was she carried to?

Answer: Cyprus

She was attended by Eros and Himerus when she arose from the foam.
2. Ironically, Aphrodite the fair was married to the ugliest of Olympians, Hephaestus. What did he agree to do in exchange for her hand?

Answer: Free Hera from her throne

After Hephaestus' birth, Hera threw him out from Mount Olympus. He landed on Lemnos, where he was cared for by nymphs. Resentful of the way his mother treated him, Hephaestus made her a magical throne. Pleased and charmed by the gift, Hera immediately sat upon it and soon found out that she was unable to get up anymore.
3. I am a son of Aphrodite and Dionysus. I am the Greek protector of gardens, domestic animals and fruits. Pictures of me with my genital exposed are often placed in gardens, to ensure fertility. I was much more popular in Rome then in Greece. Who am I?

Answer: Priapus

Priapus' cult was imported to Rome by a certain Lampascus. With the Romans, he was not only the god of viniculture and gardens, but also of sailors and fisherman. "Priapea", a collection of 85 obscene poems were written to honour him.
4. I am the product of an incest of Myrrha with her father Theias. Because of my beauty and charm, Aphrodite and Persephone even had a fight over me. I was killed by a wild boar. Some people say it was Artemis, others say it was Ares, jealous of my relations with Aphrodite.

Answer: Adonis

Zeus settled Aphrodite and Persephone's dispute by saying that Adonis should spend one-third of the year with each goddess and the last third wherever he chose. Adonis preferred Aphrodite to Persephone and always spent with her the last third of the year. When he was killed, his blood created roses (or anemones).
5. I once sculpted a woman in ivory who was so beautiful that no other woman could equal her. I clothed her, gave her jewels and named her Galatea. Taking pity on me, Aphrodite brought it to life. What is my name?

Answer: Pygmalion

Some people say that Aphrodite only gave life to Galatea because she saw how much the statue looked like herself. Anyhow, Aphrodite's interference in this story actually didn't involve a single bloodshed. Amazing...
6. I am one of the three Graces who follow Aphrodite. My sisters' names mean Mirth and Good Cheer. I am also supposed by some to be the wife of Hephaestus. Who am I?

Answer: Aglaea

Aglaea, or Splendor, is the youngest of the Three Graces. Together with Euphrosyne (Mirth) and Thalia (Good Cheer), they constantly attended Aphrodite. God knows how hard that must have been... Eunomia (Order) is one of the Three Hours.
7. I fell in love with Atalanta, who swore to marry only the one who could surpass her in a race on foot. I asked Aphrodite to help me and she she gave me three golden apples which I threw before Atalanta to delay her. Who am I?

Answer: Hippomenes

Atalanta picked up the apples, and it made her lose. I wouldn't want to be pessimist or anything, but do you really think it was for love that Atalanta picked Hippomenes' apples? Bribery...
8. In the 'Illiad', Aphrodite was wounded in the hand while protecting her son Aeneas from Diomedes. She then fled to Mount Olympus to seek comfort from Dione. Zeus told her: "No, my child, Not for you are the works of warfare, ___________________________."

Answer: rather concern yourself only with the lovely secrets of marriage.

Zeus also said: "Leave war to Athene and Ares". Diomedes was protected by Athena, who granted him the power to be able to see all immortals on the battlefield. However, she advised him to steer clear of all of them except for Aphrodite, telling him: "Her at least you may stab."
9. In the story of Psyche, Aphrodite played the role of a villainous mother-in-law. She gave Psyche a box and told her to go somewhere (the place gives too much of a clue) and ask ___________ to fill the box with a bit of beauty. Who is that person?

Answer: Persephone

Psyche's beauty was so extraordinary that many people said she was even more beautiful than Aphrodite. The goddess, jealous, asked her son Eros to make "that mortal" fall in love with an ugly man. However, Eros fell in love himself with Psyche, and came to her every night and forbade her to ever try to see how he looked like. Psyche obeyed, but her two sisters' instigations made her try to discover her husband's true identity. During the night, armed with an oil lamp and a dagger, she finally saw Eros' face.

While she was looking, a drop of oil fell on him, waking him up. He left her. Psyche wandered the earth in search of Eros and then threw herself at Venus' mercy. The goddess made her do a number of impossible tasks, but with the help of nature and small animals, Psyche always succeeded, until the episode of the beauty casket, in which she was plunged into a deep sleep.

In the end, Eros saves her and pleaded with Zeus to make her immortal. With the blessing of Zeus, Psyche and Eros lived happily ever after.
