Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starbucks' logo is a very common sight. However, can you name what type of mythological character it really is a picture of? They were known to have a hypnotic voice that lured sailors to their deaths, and even tried to reel in Odysseus when he was sailing by.

Answer: Sirens

Odysseus managed to elude the sirens' call by tying himself to the mast of the ship, while his crew members plugged their ears with wax.
2. The famous symbol of Nike shoes is a check mark. Few people know that it really represents the wings of the goddess Nike, after whom the brand is named. What is Nike the goddess of?

Answer: Victory

Nike, though a minor goddess, had quite a bit of influence on the Greeks. It is said that during a battle, whichever side of the battlefield she would fly over, that army would be the victor.
3. The city of Atlanta, Georgia (the state, not the country) is named after after Atalanta, a Greek woman who was considered to be the fastest woman alive. Who finally defeated her in a running race?

Answer: Hippomenes

Atalanta swore that she would only marry a man who could beat her in a race. Hippomenes obtained three golden apples from Aphrodite that he used to distract Atalanta and win the race.
4. Calling something an "Achilles' heel" is equivalent to calling something someone's main or single weakness. This term is used frequently in both literature and modern language. However, can you name the mother of Achilles who dipped him in the River Styx?

Answer: Thetis

His mother Thetis, as the story goes, tried to make him invulnerable in battle by dipping him in the River Styx, but held him by his heel, causing that to be his only weak spot.
5. Many people have heard of amazon.com, but not many of them much about the mythological kind. Who was the queen of the Amazons who led twelve Amazons into the Trojan war and was killed by Achilles?

Answer: Penthesilea

In order to overcome the grief of accidentally killing her sister, Hippolyta II on a hunt, she decided to fight in the Trojan War. Because she was a daughter of Ares, she fought and killed many Greeks until she died in battle against Achilles. As legend has it, Achilles took off her helmet, and "fell in love with her corpse" after he realized that he had killed a woman.
6. The Andromeda Galaxy, the constellation Andromeda, and even the sci-fi TV show called "Andromeda" all come from Greek mythology. Who was the mother of Andromeda who, by boasting of her beauty, nearly had Andromeda eaten by a sea monster?

Answer: Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia, due to her vanity, boasted about being more beautiful than the Nereids. For this, Poseidon commanded her to sacrifice her daughter to be eaten by a sea monster. It would have worked too, had Perseus, on his way back from killing Medusa, not decided to go all heroic on her and rescue her.
7. The mascot of many universities, including California State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is the same as a famous group of mythological characters. What was this group, of which some lesser known members are Coeus, Themis, and Theia?

Answer: Titans

Coeus was the Titan of intelligence; Themis was the Titan of justice and order; and Theia was the Titaness of heavenly light and sight (some sources call her a god, but it is generally accepted that she is a minor Titan.)
8. Disney even made a movie about mythology! "Hercules", full of inaccuracies, made a big blunder when it came to identifying who trained the hero. In the movie, he is a satyr named Philoctetes (Phil for short), but, based on myth, Chiron the centaur actually trained him. However, Philoctetes is an actual mythological figure who did have something to do with Hercules. What did the real Philoctetes inherit from Hercules?

Answer: His bow and arrows (dipped in Hydra's blood of course)

Philoctetes was a famous hero who inherited Hercules' bow and arrow when he died. Hercules' wife, Deinara, learned that he was having an affair, and thus used the "love charm" that the centaur Nessus had given to her after Hercules killed him, on his shirt.

It actually was poison (big surprise there), and Hercules, in extreme pain, wanted to die and was thus burned on a funeral pyre lit by none other than Philoctetes.
9. I'm sure that you have seen or at least heard of the medical symbol of a staff that has two snakes winding around it, and you may even know that that is a symbol of Hermes, but do you know the name for this staff as well as Hermes' winged hat and sandals, respectively?

Answer: Caduceus, Petasus, and Talaria

Hermes was the god of travel, commerce, and thieves. The caduceus was a common astrological symbol until the seventh century, when it became more of a symbol for medicine, due to the use of astrology in the healing of that time. Eventually, it evolved into our modern day symbol of physicians.
10. What is the name of the island over which ruled the father of the mythological character whose name is shared with the name of the product introduced in 1947 whose slogan originally was "Stronger than Dirt!"?(quite a mouthful, isn't it?)

Answer: Salamis

To break it down for you, Salamis is the island over which ruled Telamon, the father of Ajax, which shares its name with the cleaning product that has the slogan "Stronger Than Dirt!"
