Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the musical "Les Miserables," what relation does Eponine have to Thenardier?

Answer: daughter

This question should have been obvious to anyone who has read the book. However, if you haven't read the book, this still should have been fairly logical. When we first meet the Thenardiers' (1823, Montfermeil) after "Castle on a Cloud," Madame Thenardier primps up young Eponine after chastizing young Cosette. "Eponine, come my dear, Eponine, let me see you/you look very well in that little blue hat/There's some little girls who know how to behave/and they know what to wear/and I'm saying thank heaven for that."
2. In the musical "Annie," what relation does Grace have to Mr. Warbucks?

Answer: Secretary

For the majority of the musical we see Grace as Oliver Warbucks' secretary. At the end of the musical, there is a hint of a possible future relationship between them, but it is not expressed explicitly.
3. In the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie," what relation does Jimmy have to Muzzy?

Answer: stepson

I thought that the previous questions were way too easy, so I decided to pull a tricky one...sorry. In the very action-filled and slightly-confusing climax of "Thoroughly Modern Millie," we find out that the wealthy Miss Dorothy and apparently poor Jimmy Smith are sister and brother and that "Manhattan's most celebrated chanteuse" Muzzy Van Hossmere is their stepmother.
4. In the musical "Carousel," what relation does Billy have to Louise?

Answer: Father

"Carousel," Rogers and Hammerstein's second musical after "Oklahoma," tells the story of Billy Bigelow, a carnival worker who falls in love with Julie Jordan, a factory worker. When Billy realizes that he is going to become a father, he becomes desperate for money and is killed in an act of attempted robbery.

He is allowed, however, to return to Earth to do one good deed, and he encourages his daughter, Louise, now a young woman, to have confidence in herself.
5. In the musical "Gypsy," what relation does Louise have to June?

Answer: sister

"Gypsy" is about Mama Rose (originated on Broadway by the late Ethel Merman and in a recent revival by Bernadette Peters) and her obsession with her daughters' show biz careers. The daughters are named June ("Hi everybody! My name's June! What's yours?") and Louise ("Sing out, Louise!")
6. Okay, now for a slight change in format. In the musical "Crazy for You," who is Bobby's (by the end of the musical "ex") fiancee?

Answer: Irene

Irene is Bobby's overbearing fiancee whom we first meet when she is imposing her ideas on Bobby about their going-to-be extravagent wedding. Lottie is Bobby's just-as-overbearing mother, Polly is the "cowgirl" with whom Bobby eventually falls in love (and consequently leaves Irene in the dust), and Tess is one of the "Follies Girls" who appears throughout the show
7. In the musical "Damn Yankees," who is Joe Boyd's wife?

Answer: Meg

In "Damn Yankees," Joe Boyd is a middle-aged Washington Senators fan who signs a Faustian pact with the Devil for the chance to become a young baseball star and play for the Senators. Meg is Joe Boyd's wife who is frustrated with her husband's obsession with baseball ("Six months out of every year we are hardly ever seen apart/but then the Washington Senators take over my place in his heart!") Lola is the seductress whom the Devil hires to prevent Joe from returning to his wife at the end of the season. Gloria is the annoying reporter who is always snooping around the Senators' locker room. Doris is one of Meg's friends who is a member of their bridge club.
8. In the musical "The Sound of Music," what is the first name of the woman to whom Captain Von Trapp is engaged before meeting Maria?

Answer: Elsa

Elsa Schraeder (originated on Broadway by Marion Marlowe and played in the movie by Eleanor Parker) is the semi-evil fiancee to Captain Von Trapp. She is very mean to Maria and causes her to leave the Von Trapp home. In the musical, she sings in two songs ("How Can Love Survive" and "There's No Way to Stop It") but both were cut from the film because the producers felt that if Elsa sang, she would become a sympathetic character.
9. In the musical "The Fiddler on the Roof," whom of the following is NOT one of Tevye's daughters?

Answer: Yente

"Fiddler on the Roof" (originally starring Zero Mostel on Broadway) is the story of a poor Jewish dairy farmer named Tevye who is attempting to maintain tradition in the small town of Anatevka. Tevye and his wife Golde have five daughters: Hodel, Tzeitel, Chava, Bielke, and Shprintze. Yente is the matchmaker.
10. In the musical "The Phantom of the Opera," who is Carlotta's husband?

Answer: Piangi

Prima Donna soprano Carlotta's husband's name is Ubaldo Piangi. He sings tenor for the Opera and is almost as big-headed as Carlotta is. He starred as Don Juan in the Phantom's opera, "Don Juan Triumphant," until the Phantom hanged him and took the role to get to Christine. You have reached the end of my quiz! I hope you liked it.
