Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cabaret

Answer: Maybe This time

'Cabaret' is a wonderful 1966 show written by Kander and Ebb, who also wrote 'Chicago'. It is set in 1930s in Berlin during the rise of Nazism, mainly in a seedy backstreet cabaret club. Sally Bowles, played in the movie by Liza Minnelli, sings this song when she hopes that she may have something better in her life, but she can't hold on to that good thing.
2. Gigi

Answer: She's not Thinking of Me

This musical is based on a novel by Collette, and the music and lyrics were written by Lerner and Lowe. It is about a young girl who comes from a family of courtesans, though such a life does not really suit her. A rich friend of the family, Gaston, sings this song about his previous mistress before he realizes that he is in love with Gigi.
3. Oliver!

Answer: Where is Love?

'Oliver!' is a musical written by Lionel Bart, which was based on a novel written in 1838 by Charles Dickens. Oliver is a young boy who escapes from a work house and lives alone on the streets of London until he meets many people both good and abusive. There are many loud group songs in 'Oliver!' but 'Where is Love?'is sung as a solo by Oliver himself.
4. Lady and the Tramp

Answer: We are Siamese (If You Please)

'Lady and the Tramp'(1955) is a charming Walt Disney animated movie in which a refined spaniel named Lady falls in love with a dashing and cheeky rogue called Tramp. The song is sung by a pair of Siamese cats who are introduced into Lady's home after an aunt comes to stay to help with a new born baby.
5. West Side Story

Answer: Something's Coming

Tony sings this wonderful song before the night of the dance where he meets Maria. It really evokes the feeling of excitment that some good thing is just around the corner. The music was written by Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is based on the play 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare.
6. Paint Your Wagon

Answer: I Talk to the Trees

This musical is a story about a woman in the Old West who has two husbands. One of them is played in the movie by Clint Eastwood and he talks to the trees about his feelings. The show was created by Lerner and Lowe, who also wrote 'Gigi'.
7. The Flower Drum Song

Answer: A Hundred Thousand Miracles

This is a musical about some Chinese refugees who have to keep a low profile because they are illegally in the United States. It seems to me to be rather strange when they begin singing 'A Hundred Thousand Miracles' in the street to collect money. The musical was created by Ocar Hammerstein, Joseph Fields and David Henry Hwang.
8. South Pacific

Answer: Honey Bun

This musical is about American troops based on an island in the South Pacific during the Second World War. They are all very far from home and Nellie, who is one of the nurses, puts on a show for them. She sings this song to a very masculine man who dances about with two coconuts being 'Honey Bun'. It was written by Rogers and Hammerstein.
9. Cats

Answer: Magical Mister Mistoffelees

Mr. Mistoffelees is one of the 'Cats' from the 1939 book of poetry by T.S. Eliot on which the musical is based. He is one of those black and white cats who looks as if he is wearing a tuxedo, and he has magical powers. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for the poems.
10. Chicago

Answer: Mr. Cellophane

Poor Mr. Cellophane is the husband of the main character Roxy Hart, who is not interested in him at all. In fact, no one ever seems to notice him. His name is Amos, but his wife's lawyer always calls him Andy. The music and lyrics were written by Kander and Ebb.
