Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which type of paint did European artists use during the 15th through 19th centuries?

Answer: Oil

Oil paints have been used for centuries, and most museum paintings were done using oil paints. Contemporary artists use a wide variety of media. Before 1500, tempera paints were the primary medium used by most European artists.
2. Which type of paint is usually used on paper?

Answer: Watercolor

This is a good starting paint, and comes in pans of dry paint or tubes of paint with a little bit of water added.
3. Which of these types of paint dries the most quickly, when applied at about the same density?

Answer: Acrylic

Acrylic paints are touch-dry in minutes, and fully dry in a week or two; gouache can be even quicker. Oil paints are touch-dry in 2-7 days, depending on thickness and climate, and fully dry in 6 months to 2 years.
4. Which type of paint is the newest?

Answer: Acrylic

5. Which of these non-traditional types of oil paints is actually available for use in art?

Answer: Water-soluble oil paints

Water-soluble oils have made it cheaper and easier to use oils.
6. Which of these is NOT considered paint in the form of a stick?

Answer: Water-soluble crayons

Water-soluble crayons and pencils can, if used properly, be made to look like a painting, but are not considered stick paints.
7. True of false: You need to buy more of a variety of colors of liquid paints than you do of stick paints.

Answer: False

No! It's the other way around. You cannot mix stick paints together as fully as you can mix liquid paints.
8. True or False: Painting fat-over-lean means you add thinner to the lower layers of paint and oil to the upper layers.

Answer: True

Painting fat-over-lean helps prevent the upper layers of paint from cracking. Painting thick-over-thin also does this.
9. What is the difference between artist's quality and student's quality paint?

Answer: Artist's quality paint contains more pigment and less filler

Artist's quality paint is higher quality, slighly more expensive, more permanent, and looks better in a painting. Harder to use? Of course not! Actually, since there is more of a variety of colors, it's easier!
10. What is the name for something you mix in your paint to give it different qualities?

Answer: Medium

Some examples are gloss medium, which makes your paint dry shiny, retarding medium, which keeps your paint wet longer, and gel medium, which gives your paint more volume, allowing your brushstrokes to show.
