Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the three primary colors when considering paints?

Answer: Yellow, Blue, Red

These three colors can be combined to form all the other colors except white.
2. What are the six tertiary colors?

Answer: Yellow-green, Blue-green, Blue-violet, Red-Violet, Red-orange, Yellow-orange

You form these colors by mixing one primary color and one secondary color together. The secondary color must be one that was made using the same primary color. Orange and yellow gives yellow-orange, orange and red gives red-orange, orange and green gives brown (as you have effectively mixed all three primary colors together).
3. What is/are the secondary color(s)?

Answer: Orange, Violet, Green

These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.
4. How do you make neutral grey?

Answer: Mix black and white

In art, black is used to darken any color mostly. White is used to lighten any color. When you mix them, you get various shades of grey.
5. Which of these is a group of cool colors?

Answer: Green, Blue, Violet

Cool colors tend to have a calming effect.
6. Which of these are considered warm colors?

Answer: Yellow, Orange, Red

Warm colors tend to have a warming up feeling.
7. No matter how hard you try, you can't mix different paint to make white.

Answer: True

White (in paints) is made by a substance that reflects all colors of the spectrum equally. The other colors absorb all except the color you see, which is reflected. When you mix different colors, you get more colors taken out of the reflection - with enough of them, you will end up with a muddy brown color.
8. How many colors are on a basic painter's color wheel?

Answer: 12

There are three primary colors, three secondary colors, and six tertiary colors. There are, of course, many more possible colors, but the color wheel usually only displays these ones.
9. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666.

Answer: True

Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors, also called the color wheel, in 1666.
10. When you mix pigments that are complementary colors, what color do you get?

Answer: Brown

Complementary colors are any two colors of light which produce white when their colors are mixed; they are said to be complementary colors of each other. When you mix pigments of those two colors, the result appears brown.
